After months upon months of organizing, protesting and Twitter hashtagging, Warrior Nun fans managed to save the Netflix series from cancellation, after allowing its producers and showrunner to make the case that it should live past two seasons.
However, it’s been a while since that happened, and no one knew exactly how the show was “saved” and what form that would take. It seemed unlikely Netflix itself had been convinced to resurrect it, but who? Well, now we have an answer.
A new video from producer Dean English, the guy who pitched adapting the graphic novel in the first place, has announced that the show will not return as a show, but as a trilogy of movies. The announcement is a bit odd given the SAG-WGA strike situation, as while the trilogy is announced, there are no specific details about who is making it or when it’s coming, as that would be breaking the “no promotion of future projects” clause of the strikes. I guess a more generalized announcement like this doesn’t count.
However, English answers a question that he poses to himself: “Does this perhaps infer there’s going to be a universe being launched of Warrior Nun, which could expand into films and TV series following character that we already know? The answer to that question is yes.”
I mean, I’ll say that a “Warrior Nun universe” is not something I expected, and a dead show that was saved by the skin of its teeth seems like it’s making some very, very large plans after that. I mean, I certainly hope it all comes to fruition, but it sounds like we’re starting with this movie trilogy.
My guess is absolutely that these movies are not going to be a theatrical release, and that they will be released on streaming…somewhere. They didn’t say it’s not Netflix, but who knows. I’m a little curious as to why it’s three movies, when three movies at 90 minutes to 2 hours each could be 6-8 45 minute episodes so…the length of a normal TV season these days. I think it might have something to do with spreading out the release so it’s easier to release in small batches with longer spaces between them. But as for this “universe” that will expand out from here? We’ll see.
I have always said that people should ignore the odd name and watch Warrior Nun, and that’s more true now than ever, given that it’s not going to end on a cliffhanger anymore. It has some of the best fight choreography I’ve seen on Netflix, and it’s a lot of fun, especially season 2. Looking forward to whatever this ends up being.
