Miley Cyrus made a splash on Friday (August 25) with the release of her new single, “Used To Be Young.” The track had been teased for weeks, creating quite a bit of anticipation. With this release, Cyrus aims to demonstrate that despite some recent underperforming singles, she’s capable of swiftly regaining her status as a tried-and-true hitmaker.
The Grammy-nominated musician commenced 2023 with a bang, marking one of the most remarkable chapters in her storied career. The superstar started the year with her single “Flowers,” which immediately became a smash hit. The tune debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, marking her first immediate chart-topper and her second track to lead the rankings. “Flowers” maintained its reign on the competitive tally for nearly two months and it stands as one of the biggest hits of 2023.
“Flowers” served as a preview for Cyrus’s then-upcoming album, Endless Summer Vacation, which arrived in mid-March. The album itself entered and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, slightly lower than some anticipated given the massive success of “Flowers.” However, while the album came close to chart-topping status, the two subsequent singles extracted from the full-length album did not achieve the same level of success.
Following “Flowers,” Cyrus introduced “River,” an electronic and synth-pop track, as her second single from Endless Summer Vacation. While catchy and an understandable choice for promotion, the song didn’t attain the same level of success as its predecessor. “River” entered the top 40 of the Hot 100, peaking at No. 32. It also performed exceptionally well on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, stopping just shy of clinching the top spot.
Once the phase of “River” had concluded, Cyrus shifted her focus to “Jaded,” another track from Endless Summer Vacation. Unfortunately, “Jaded” fared even worse on the charts. The single failed to break into the upper half of the Hot 100, stalling at No. 56.
This disappointing performance was notable, especially considering its proximity to the success of the album’s lead cut. Amazingly, “Flowers” continues to outperform the more recent singles from Endless Summer Vacation to this day, as it still maintains its position within the top 20 on the current chart more than 30 weeks after its debut.
With the release of “Used To Be Young,” Cyrus seems determined to reassert her ability to produce multiple hits within a single era. In the past few years, she has faced challenges with albums that seem to yield only one standout track before audiences move on.
“Used To Be Young” has the potential to alter this pattern and emphasize that Cyrus remains capable of consistently topping the charts and dominating radio airwaves. While the track’s performance is yet to be determined, it may be poised for a strong debut on the Hot 100 in the coming days, which may be enough to break this trend.
