Drake Moves His Album To Compete Directly With Doja Cat

News Room

For weeks now, Drake has been teasing his forthcoming album For All The Dogs, but he has remained vague in his hints and clues. The rapper had promised that the set was coming soon but failed to provide an actual release date…until now.

For All The Dogs is coming out on Friday, September 22, so fans don’t have to wait long to hear the latest full collection from one of the biggest musical stars on the planet. But that date doesn’t belong to Drake and Drake alone, and he chose an intriguing way to let the masses know when they can pick up a copy.

The hip-hop powerhouse took to Instagram to reveal that his album does finally have a release date. He posted a throwback video that stars his father, Dennis Graham, who at the time it was shot went by the name “Cousin Dennis.” The senior Graham appears on a local Toronto TV show called Stormy Monday With Danny Marks, which was popular in the region in the early ’90s. Drake’s dad introduces himself as “Dennis Graham from Memphis, Tennessee” before playing to the audience with his blues band. He even threw in a harmonica solo as well.

Drake captioned the video, simply, “FOR ALL THE DOGS SEPTEMBER 22.” That makes it pretty clear when the album is arriving, but it doesn’t really explain the video itself. It’s an odd choice, but Drake is known for such moves from time to time.

With Drake’s album For All The Dogs coming out on September 22, he places himself in direct competition with another major superstar. Not long ago, Doja Cat revealed that her album Scarlet is set to drop on the same day. She claimed the time first, so this is a move by Drake to steal the spotlight from the rapper and singer.

For All The Dogs marks Drake’s eighth solo album, but he has actually released much more music throughout his years as a star. He has also doled out several mixtapes, other collections and collaborative projects as well. This new set was preceded by the single “Search & Rescue,” which debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 this past spring.

For Cat, Scarlet will be her fourth album, and it was set up to be a major win for her. She has already released three singles from the set, “Attention,” “Paint the Town Red” and most recently, “Demons.” “Attention” broke into the top 40 on the Hot 100 but then fell off, but her more recent singles are performing even better. So far, “Paint the Town Red” has reached No. 3 on the chart, but it’s expected to rise to No. 1 very soon. “Demons” dropped just a few days ago, so it hasn’t yet had a chance to chart.
