At the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, while Taylor Swift dominated the evening by winning nine awards, there were several other artists who made their own history and celebrated significant victories.
Jung Kook and rapper Latto emerged as the champions in the Song of the Summer category with their collaboration “Seven.” Jung Kook’s win marked a historic moment as he became only the second South Korean solo artist to win a VMA.
The first solo artist from South Korea to earn a VMA was Lisa, a member of the popular group Blackpink. She won the Best K-Pop trophy in 2022 for her music video “Lalisa.” Notably, Jung Kook is the first male soloist to win a VMA.
What makes Jung Kook’s achievement even more remarkable is that he is the first K-pop solo musician to win a VMA in a category that wasn’t exclusively focused on the genre. Lisa’s win was in the Best K-Pop category, which was specifically designated for artists associated with K-pop. In contrast, Jung Kook competed against a diverse range of acts from various genres.
The Song of the Summer category began with 16 nominees, and the list of contenders was gradually narrowed down until Jung Kook and Latto emerged as the winners. Their victory included surpassing major stars like Olivia Rodrigo, Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, and Taylor Swift, among others.
While this marked Jung Kook’s first solo win at the VMAs, he is no stranger to receiving awards as a member of BTS. The group, currently on hiatus, has earned at least nine VMAs in various categories, including Song of the Summer and Best Group, among others.
