As social media becomes more and more important when it comes to breaking new artists and introducing songs to the masses, Billboard, the company behind the weekly rankings of the most-consumed singles and albums in the U.S., continues to find ways to include the top platforms in its charts.
Today (September 14), Billboard and TikTok have announced the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart, a new weekly tally that will rank the most popular songs on the social video platform.
For now, the chart will only look at those tunes performing the best on TikTok in the United States.
Where songs rank on the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart will determined by a combination of factors. These important metrics are set to include the number of user creations that include the song, the number of video views as well as total user engagement.
The TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart will be updated and released every Thursday. That makes it different from almost all other Billboard rankings, which are refreshed on Tuesdays.
TikTok users can find the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart on the app by clicking on the round icon located in the bottom corner of the screen. Once chosen, a button that reads Music Charts should appear in the top right corner. Fans need to select that, and they should be able to scroll through the 50-spot tally.
The TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart will also be available to view on Billboard’s website along with dozens of other weekly rankings.
Billboard reports that Sexyy Red has become the first artist to top the inaugural TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart. The rapper’s hit song “SkeeYee” is the debut No. 1 on the tally. Impressively, the rising hip-hop talent also scores three other placements on the tally.
Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red” comes in at No. 2, and Taylor Swift’s “August” lands at No. 3 on the first-ever TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart. The debut ranking includes a healthy mix of styles and even generations of artists, including names like Zach Bryan, Pinegrove and Charlie Wilson.
The TikTok Billboard Top 50 isn’t the first chart from Billboard to focus on a social media platform. Years ago, the company introduced one that painted a picture of the biggest hits on MySpace. Currently, there is also a weekly ranking of the most-discussed tracks on Twitter (now known as X), which is called the Hot Trending Songs chart.
