The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) hit an especially high note, as the annual ceremony turned out to be a major success when it comes to viewers tuning in. The show was anchored by Taylor Swift, who went into the evening as the most-nominated star and perhaps the most famous name who was there to accept her prizes.

The 2023 VMAs brought in an audience of 865,000 viewers, a significant increase from the 630,000 viewers in the previous year. That’s up 37% when compared to the 2022 ceremony.

These figures are based on fast national data compiled by Nielsen and published via Deadline. The numbers account for viewership solely on the MTV cable channel, though that’s not the only way interested fans could view the show.

This year’s VMAs also aired on other networks owned by Paramount, which also owns MTV. Viewership data for those seeing the ceremony on channels like BET and VH1 have yet to be released, but they will surely increase that 865,000 viewers sum.

Paramount+, the conglomerate’s streaming platform, did not stream the VMAs live, the ceremony became available for streaming on Wednesday, the day following the ceremony.

The latest VMAs performed well in the all-important demographic ratings as well. The show achieved a rating of 1.03 in the 18-49 demographic and an impressive 1.14 among adults aged 18-34. This marks a substantial improvement of 77% from last year’s rating of 0.58 in adults 18-49 and an even more remarkable 118% improvement from the 0.52 rating in adults 18-34 recorded in the previous year.

The 2023 VMAs landed the best ratings in these vital and closely-watched demographics in several years. This resurgence in viewership and ratings reflects the continued significance and influence of the MTV Video Music Awards, which remain a must-watch event for music enthusiasts and fans of the entertainment industry, even though the biggest moments are often covered on social media just moments after they happen.
