Madonna’s 2023 single “Popular” has not only returned her to chart success but has also become one of the most enduring tracks in her illustrious career, at least on one specific Billboard chart.
Earlier this year, “Popular” propelled Madonna to new heights on various music charts while also making her presence felt rankings she had never reached before. Months later, the song continues to demonstrate its remarkable staying power, solidifying its status as one of her most stable charting tracks.
In the latest chart update, “Popular” has ascended on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, climbing from No. 19 to No. 16. The song had previously peaked at No. 14, and it is now inching closer to reclaiming its highest position. The Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart ranks the most-consumed songs in America classified under rap, R&B or hip-hop genres, taking into account streaming, sales, and radio airplay data.
With 15 weeks on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, “Popular” now stands as Madonna’s third-longest-charting hit on the tally. As of this frame, it is tied with “Like A Virgin,” which also spent 15 weeks on the chart before exiting.
Outranking both “Popular” and “Like A Virgin” when it comes to Madonna’s list of longest-running singles on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart are “Holiday” (18 weeks) and “Take A Bow” (16 weeks).
As “Popular” continues to perform strongly, maintaining its position within the top 20 on the 50-spot Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, it is highly likely that the song will extend its tenure on the chart, matching and surpassing the 15-week mark set by “Like A Virgin” in the near future. “Popular” may eventually match the 18-week run of “Holiday” in the coming months, as it shows no signs of declining in popularity.
Despite being one of her notable hits, “Popular” actually credits Madonna in a featured role. The track is led by The Weeknd and also features Playboi Carti. It was released as part of The Weeknd’s HBO TV series, The Idol, which has since been canceled.
