Jung Kook Found A Formula That Works And He’s Sticking To It

News Room

Later this week, Jung Kook will return with what is being labeled his second official solo single, “3D.” The singer teased the highly-anticipated cut during his performance at the Global Citizen Festival, and his label quickly confirmed the news to the world that the tune was on its way.

Based on the information that’s already been released about “3D,” it seems that the BTS star has found a format and formula that worked for him once, and he’s looking to replicate the historic success he enjoyed with his debut offering with a second hit.

“3D” is described by Jung Kook’s label Big Hit Music as a hybrid between R&B and pop, which sounds similar to the style he brought to his debut solo single, “Seven.” That tune debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 earlier this year, making Jung Kook only the second South Korean solo musician to top the tally. The tune is still charting, and it became a historic win in many ways for the BTS musician.

“Seven” was not just a hit in America; it was a worldwide win. Months after its release, the song is still charting high on Billboard’s global rankings. It’s clear that millions of people not only love Jung Kook but also his single, so why shouldn’t he give them more of the same type of song?

The similarities between “Seven” and “3D” don’t end with genre. The upcoming single features rapper Jack Harlow, and it’s not the first time Jung Kook has partnered with that type of artist. For his previous smash, the BTS star teamed up with Latto, who contributed a verse to the hit.

Both “Seven” and “3D” feature Jung Kook singing and a young American hip-hop artist. Both Latto and Harlow came into their collaboration with the K-pop icon as Grammy-nominated stars in their own right, known for mixing their own blend of hip-hop with pop sensibilities. They had already made a name for themselves with both their own singles and high-profile duets.

Adding a rapper like Harlow or Latto isn’t just a creative decision, not when someone is aiming for the top of the charts like Jung Kook. Including a rap verse helps the tune appeal to a larger audience. He is already melding pop and R&B, and by inserting some hip-hop in there as well, there is a better chance that “3D” will become not just a momentary big hit but a sturdy one. The tried-and-true move opens the cut up to more widespread radio success, which has helped “Seven” become a real smash.

“3D” is expected to arrive on Friday, September 29. It will almost surely debut on the Billboard charts the following week, though how it will perform, and how fans and critics will feel about this second single, is yet to be seen.
