Following the news that Drake’s entering a musical hiatus due to his health, the rapper extended a gesture to help one of his fans battling multiple sclerosis.
At his Toronto concert on Friday, October 6, the 36-year-old hip-hop star offered to pay for a fan’s medical expenses after she shared on a sign that she was diagnosed with MS.
In a video shared by a concert attendee, and reposted by Complex Music, Drake is seen stopping his set to acknowledge the poster. “This one’s important to me,” he told the crowd. “Her sign says, ‘I just found out I have MS, will you help make my night.’”
Drake then mentioned his close friend, record producer Noah James Shebi, who was diagnosed with MS at age 22 in 2005.
“You know, my brother 40 is one of the strongest people on earth, and he fights through a lot of things,” Drake said of Shebi. “So what I’m going to do is, I’m going to connect you with 40 first of all, maybe you can have a conversation.”
He continued: “And second of all, I’m going to pay whatever it takes to get you the best help in the world, I promise you that,” he said, adding that the fan’s also invited to return to his performance the following day. “You got my word — and you can come back tomorrow night!”
According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, “Multiple sclerosis is a disease that impacts the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, which make up the central nervous system and controls everything we do.” The exact cause of MS is unknown.
The big screen then panned to the emotional reaction of the fan, who was crying. She was shocked when she realized Drake had also invited her back tomorrow.
The kind gesture comes after Drake revealed this past weekend that he’s taking a step back from music to focus on his health.
“I probably won’t make music for a little bit,” he said during an episode of his Sirius XM show, Table for One. “I’m going to be real with you. I need to focus on my health, first and foremost, and I’ll talk about that soon enough.”
“I’ve been having the craziest problems for years with my stomach,” he continued. The rapper reiterated that he has to “focus on my health, and I need to get [that] right.”
Drake also said that he isn’t sure how long his break from music may last. “I don’t even know what a little bit is… Maybe a year or so, maybe a little longer,” he speculated.
On October 6, the Canadian rapper released his eighth studio album, For All The Dogs. The LP features 23 tracks with collaborations from 21 Savage, J. Cole, SZA, Bad Bunny and more. For All The Dogs follows Drake’s two releases last year, Honestly, Nevermind and Her Loss. The latter was co-released with 21 Savage.
