“Dreams” is one of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest hits, and in recent years, it has seemingly taken on a new life. The tune is not only popular with longtime followers of the band, as it has reached younger generations as well thanks to platforms like TikTok. Now, the track is enjoying continued and impressive popularity–so much so that this week the title appears twice on the same Billboard chart.
Fleetwood Mac’s single is present on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart in two versions, as Americans purchased both in large enough quantities for the tune to occupy a pair of spaces. This kind of performance is not necessarily unprecedented, but it’s seen very rarely, and it’s a sign that interest in the cut remains incredibly high, even after decades of availability.
Up first among the two takes of “Dreams” is Fleetwood Mac’s original version. That edition sits at No. 19 on the ranking of the bestselling rock songs in America. It’s up slightly from No. 24, where it sat last time around. Impressively, the band has kept their hit on the tally for 110 weeks.
New at No. 25 is a cover of “Dreams” by rising singer-songwriter Lanie Gardner. Her version was only released in early October, but it has taken off quickly and nearly immediately become a bestseller.
Gardner has actually covered “Dreams” before, but this latest version is a solo endeavor, and one that sticks closely to the feel and sound of the original. Back in December 2020, she joined producers David Guetta and Morten on a reworking of the Fleetwood Mac smash, which took the cut in a very different direction.
That version of “Dreams” was categorized as dance and electronic in genre by Billboard, and thus it wasn’t eligible for the rock charts. The Guetta, Morten and Gardner cover of “Dreams” peaked at No. 31 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart and No. 4 on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales ranking.
