The Ones Who Live’ Gets A Release Date

News Room

AMC decided to dump out a bunch of Walking Dead news yesterday, the first bit being that Carol will reunite with Daryl on his self-named show. But now season 2 will be called “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol.” Not a mouthful at all. This ends the saga of Carol actress Melissa McBride not wanting to do the show initially because of its filming in Europe at the time, but now she seems to have come around.

The second piece of news is about the Rick and Michone spin-off, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. In addition to a couple new photos from it, we now have a release date for the series. Well, a release month, in any case. That would be February 2024, four months from now. We believe it’s a six episode miniseries, though it doesn’t seem 100% clear it’s the last we’ll see from those characters as the Walking Dead is now spinning out characters and shows in odd ways. Negan’s Dead City’s has a season 2 coming, so does Daryl Dixon, as we just saw. So who knows.

And you know what? It’s working. Both Dead City and Daryl Dixon are a lot better than the last few seasons of The Walking Dead itself and are being received well by fans. No, AMC’s massive Walking Dead viewership is never going to return, but it definitely seems like a successful experiment.

Daryl Dixon is about to wrap up its first season run on Sunday, and I am frankly a little surprised they announced Carol’s return before, not after that episode aired. Then it’s 3.5-4 months until The Ones Who Live which will have Michonne rescuing Rick from CRM control, and presumably going back to reunite with his kids again. Though again, maybe there are secretly more seasons planned before that happens. We don’t really know where this is happening in the timeline along with Dead City and Daryl Dixon, as they may not all be taking place at the same time.

I liked Dead City more than Daryl Dixon, but in general, I like this Walking Dead universe spin-off idea more than I thought I would, at least now that it’s using existing characters unlike World Beyond. By giving the spotlight to just 1-2 characters instead of a massive, sprawling ensemble, it gives them a chance to shine with more nuanced storylines rather than bouncing around between 4-5 threads. It’s working well.

Looking forward to season 2 of the ones so far and season 1 of The Ones Who Live. More on all of it soon.
