The Haunting ‘Call Of Duty’ Event Start-Time, ‘Warzone’ Zombies And Everything You Need To Know

News Room

Things are about to get quite a lot spookier in Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone as ‘The Haunting’ event kicks off this week. The Halloween-themed event also serves as the midseason update, so along with creepy changes to maps, modes and so forth, expect a big patch with gun balancing, bug fixes and more.

The Haunting event kicks off at the same time the Modern Warfare III beta ends. The beta should wrap up at about 10am PT on Tuesday, October 17th. That’s when the midseason update should go live in Modern Warfare II and Warzone and The Haunting changes will go into effect. Some of the horrific Operator Bundles (more on those in a minute) are already live.

I’d like to also point out that this is the final season of Modern Warfare II and the final season of Warzone’s Al Mazrah map. Modern Warfare III launches on November 10th and Season 1 will see the launch of the brand new Warzone map, Urzikstan, in December.

Here’s the visual aid roadmap for this final half-season:

Before we get into the changes and new content heading to these games, check out this fun new trailer:

Alright, we’ll start with Warzone, move on to Modern Warfare II and then take a look at what’s headed to both games.

Warzone The Haunting Event

Here’s what’s headed to Warzone and the DMZ during The Haunting event:

  • Operation Nightmare: In both DMZ and Battle Royale, Al Mazrah is going dark with a nighttime version of the same big map. Some points on the map will be overhauled with a spooky Halloween theme.
  • Players will be able to hunt down eldritch horrors and battle new foes like Diablo IV boss The Butcher.
  • A new suite of challenges will be available with corresponding rewards including a new Weapon Blueprint.
  • Zombie Royale: We’ve seen this in past iterations of Warzone. Basically when you get eliminated, you don’t head to the Gulag but instead are transformed into a zombie. You can head out and hunt down enemy players as an undead creature of the night, or if you’re lucky find a special syringe that heals you and transforms you back into human form.
  • Vondead: The terrific Vondel Resurgence map is transforming into Vondead, a night version of the map where the canals have turned blood red. Shops have been looted, vehicles are burning in the street, and mysterious “haunted weather” has encroached over the map (red fog, I’m guessing). Mysterious Diablo-themed altars have also been scattered around the map. Curiouser and curiouser.
  • Lockdown also returns, but with all the Halloween-themed stuff this time around.
  • New Items include: special Haunted boxes, sticky Bloodseeker Grenades and Jump Scares.

Modern Warfare II The Haunting Event

Some fun changes are also headed to multiplayer, including:

  • El Asilo and Embassy are both getting spooky overhauls. You can see this in action in the trailer above. I especially like the Dia de los Muertos stuff in El Asilo.

New twists on classic modes include:

  • Haunting Domination which is just Dom with scarecrows on the points.
  • Haunting Kill Confirmed and Grind replace dog tags with skulls.
  • Haunting Drop Zone Jump Scares is the same as before but some of the falling Killstreak crates have scary surprises inside.
  • Haunting Infected basically fixes that mode’s biggest problem by replacing infected players with the zombie versions from Warzone. This should have been the case since launch, so while I’m excited for it I’m also a little peeved it took so long.

Coming To Both Warzone and MWII In The Haunting

We’ve already gotten several Halloween-themed Operators like Alucard from Hellsing, including a bunch in the Season 6 Battle Pass which is headlined by Spawn, but even more are here for this event, including:

  • Inarius and Lillith from Diablo
  • Skeletor from Masters Of The Universe
  • Ash Williams from Evil Dead

On top of this we have the Haunting Soul Capture event across WZ and MWII. It’s basically like the Trophy Hunt Event but you gather Souls from dead Operators and trade these in for rewards in the Events Tab. Finally I can retrieve Souls not only in Dark Souls but in Call Of Duty. Praise the sun!

Actually, the Haunted Boxes look like Mimics, which is another connection to Souls games (and D&D). Maybe we’ll get a Dark Souls crossover someday . . . .
