Drake is the king of the Billboard charts once again this week, as is often the case whenever he releases a new album. The rapper’s latest set, For All The Dogs, launches at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while the project’s newest most popular cut, “First Person Shooter,” with J. Cole, opens atop the Hot 100. As he scores another leader on the latter chart, Drake breaks a tie with one of the most successful musical acts of the decade.
“First Person Shooter” is Drake’s eleventh No. 1 on the Hot 100 this decade. The hip-hop mogul now claims the most champions on the competitive tally in the 2020s decade.
Before this week, Drake was tied with BTS for this honor. As of the last frame, the two acts had both snagged half a dozen No. 1s on the Hot 100. Now, Drake has pulled ahead, and BTS is unlikely to challenge him again, at least not for a while, as the band is on hiatus until 2025.
BTS first hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 2020 and quickly racked up a trio of winners that year. They debuted their smash “Dynamite” atop the tally, then returned weeks later with “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” with Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo. Before the year was up, they sent “Life Goes On” to No. 1 as well.
In 2021, they’d repeat that success with another three Hot 100 rulers. The band topped the ranking with their own “Butter” and “Permission to Dance.” They then joined Coldplay on “My Universe,” which ruled for a short time.
Drake began his run this decade with his solo hit “Tootsie Slide” in April 2020. He earned two more Hot 100 No. 1s in 2021, with both “What’s Next” and “Way 2 Sexy” with Future and Young Thug hitting the top spot. He scored another two leaders in 2022, as “Wait for U” with Future and Tems and “Jimmy Cooks” with 21 Savage took turns running the show. Earlier this year, Drake and SZA controlled the list with “Slime You Out.”
The chart-topper has now accrued a total of 13 No. 1 hits on the Hot 100. Drake first summited the tally back in 2010 as a featured act on Rihanna’s “What’s My Name?” He waited six more years before his next winner, which was also with Rihanna, as “Work” dominated for a time in 2016.
