The Halloween-themed event ‘The Haunting’ kicked off in Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone this week and it’s honestly pretty awesome. While Modern Warfare II multiplayer got a couple of neat map overhauls, the real meat of this event is in Warzone where you’ll find Operation Nightmare.
Operation Nightmare is one of two main draws for The Haunting event. The other is gathering Souls which serve as tokens for a wide array of event rewards like Weapon Blueprints, XP tokens and Operator Skins.
Operation Nightmare is a little more involved, requiring players to complete six quests on the Al Mazrah Battle Royale map, which has turned into a night map for the event (and looks way better in the dark, by the way).
Each of these Operation Nightmare challenges rewards players with a special Calling Card, and completing five out of six gets you this slick ‘Bloody Mess’ BAS-P Weapon Blueprint:
Important to note here that you can complete this challenge in normal Battle Royale, in the new Massive Resurgence mode or in the DMZ—which, after playing quite a bit yesterday, is my recommendation. It’s just a lot less hot in DMZ compared to these other modes, though obviously the advantage with Resurgence is if you die—but your squad doesn’t get wiped—you can take another crack at it.
Where To Find The Butcher
The Butcher spawns at several different locations across the map, though he doesn’t actually spawn on the map. Rather, Altars of Lilith can be found scattered across the map which you’ll need to activate in order to summon a Nightmare Portal. Interacting with this portal takes you into a new arena filled with slow-moving zombies and the Butcher, who will race around the arena using melee attacks and occasional area-of-effect attacks.
The Butcher’s icon on the map actually appears as an Altar of Lilith, like a horned chess piece (dead center in the map below):
When you get to one of these, if they’re not activated yet, you’ll see this:
Go interact with one of the pillars on the outside of the pentagram and you’ll begin activating the portal. You need to light up all the lines in the pentagram—while zombies and probably enemy players encroach—before a portal appears in the center.
A giant glowing skull will appear in the sky alerting enemy players that the altar has been activated.
Once inside the portal, you’ll have to mow down zombies and chip away at The Butcher’s massive health bar. If you keep moving, you’ll be just fine. He’s not a super challenging boss, but you do have to be light on your feet and keep shooting away, clearing zombies and lowering his health.
The main thing I want to warn you of at this point is that this is not your arena. Enemy teams can—and likely will—join in the fight, and it’s PvEvP, meaning you can still kill each other while fighting the boss. We killed him the first time in DMZ after taking out two enemy squads at the altar. Inside the portal, we killed The Butcher without any enemy contact. When we tried the same thing in Massive Resurgence, we got rolled by an enemy team soon after starting the boss fight. That’s what makes this particularly challenging.
In any case, it’s just one of many cool new challenges in Warzone during The Haunting event. I’ll be posting guides to the other challenges here on this blog. Have fun and stay frosty!
