Jimmy Buffett’s first posthumous album, Equal Strain on All Parts, was released on Friday, November 3. It arrived just two months after the singer-songwriter’s passing in September after a private battle with cancer. Now, it seems like there might be another special project coming for superfans of the late star.
According to an article published by Billboard that pulled back the curtain on the making of Equal Strain on All Parts, there may be a documentary in the works. The film, if it ever comes to light, will seemingly focus on the creation of what would become Buffett’s last album.
The article cites comments from Mac McAnally, who co-produced Equal Strain on All Parts with Michael Utley. The two have worked with Buffett for years, and they were in the studio with him for the creation process. McAnally states that while they were writing and recording, the cameras were rolling.
McAnally commented that with so much footage, a documentary could be on the way, though he steered clear—or at least the report did—of confirming or promising anything. Instead, the producer said that, “Since we have quite a bit of content that arose from it, I think they’ll probably make use of that.” He went on to add that if for no other reason, a documentary is a good idea, “because there’s never a bad time to see that smile on his face.”
Some of the footage shot during the studio sessions for Equal Strain on All Parts has already been used, but there may be much more. The music videos for tracks like “Mozambique” with Emmylou Harris and “My Gummie Just Kicked In,” including an appearance from Paul McCartney, have already been posted to Buffett’s YouTube page.
Equal Strain on All Parts is headed for a solid start on the Billboard 200, but it seems unlikely that it will return Buffett to the No. 1 spot on the chart. It looks like Taylor Swift will remain atop the tally with her latest winner, 1989 (Taylor’s Version). That title debuts at No. 1 this week with the largest sum of the singer’s career. Buffett might have to settle for somewhere inside the top 10, as new titles by the likes of Jung Kook and Jason Aldean will also likely launch high on the tally as well.
