The list of nominees for the 2024 Grammy Awards was released nearly a week ago to much fanfare. The roundup of future winners includes many of the biggest stars on the planet, but one category’s tally of nominees is a bit odd, and the fact that one prominent name is missing can be felt quite acutely.
BTS is missing from the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category. That trophy goes to pop performances by groups, duos, or collaborations between individuals. The South Korean boy band had two tunes eligible this year, but neither song became a big hit, and thus they didn’t return to the vertical once again.
The fact that BTS wasn’t nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at this year’s Grammys isn’t surprising, as few predicted they’d earn a spot. BTS is currently tied with several other powerful artists for the third-most nominations in the history of the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category. The K-pop band has earned nods in each of the past three years, ending that streak with the 2024 ceremony. They first appeared in the field at the 2021 ceremony with their smash “Dynamite.” They then returned with “Butter” in 2022 and “My Universe” with Coldplay in 2023.
The septet comes in behind two other names for the most nominations among actual groups and duos in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance vertical. Coldplay leads, with five nods, including their one collaboration with BTS. Maroon 5 is in second, with four chances to win.
BTS is currently on hiatus as several of the members complete their military service, which is mandatory for all men in South Korea. The group’s members have all been busy with solo projects, many of which became successes on the Billboard charts. Sadly, none of the seven singers in the band earned solo Grammy nominations this year, despite some predictions some of them might have a shot.
