Drake Announces A Surprise Release, ‘Scary Hours 3,’ Dropping Tonight

News Room

Drake has surprised fans by announcing a new project titled Scary Hours 3, which is set to arrive just hours after it was first revealed. What makes this drop so unexpected is the fact that the rapper is still riding high off of he success from his recent album, For All The Dogs, which isn’t even two months old.

The Canadian superstar took to social media on Thursday (November 16) to reveal that the Scary Hours 3 EP will be available on streaming services less than 24 hours from the announcement. The project is set to arrive everywhere at midnight on Friday (November 17).

Taking to Instagram, the rapper posted a trailer for Scary Hours 3 that introduced the effort to his legion of fans. The two-minute visual includes a monologue from Drake himself, which sees him providing insight into the creative process behind this surprise project and why he’s decided to put it out now.

In this trailer, Drake states:

“I feel no need to appease anybody. I feel so confident about the body of work that I just dropped, I know I could go disappear for, whatever, six months, a year, two years—even though I’m not really into the super lengthy disappearances for the sake of mystery. But, you know, ultimately, it’s coming to me in a way that I haven’t experienced maybe since, like, If You’re Reading This, where I feel like I’m on drugs. I feel like I’m in that mental state without doing anything. I did those songs in the last five days. I didn’t have one bar written down for those songs on the night that For All the Dogs dropped. It’s not like I’m picking up from some unfinished shit. You know, this is just happening on its own. And who am I to fight it?”

Scary Hours 3 marks the third installment in Drake’s EP series, which he started in 2018. The first in the trilogy produced a pair of Hot 100 top 10 hits, including “God’s Plan.” That track has gone on to become one of his most successful, hitting No. 1 and earning a diamond certification for moving 10 million equivalent units in the U.S.

Scary Hours 2 arrived in March 2021. The three songs featured on it—“What’s Next,” “Wants and Needs” and “Lemon Pepper Freestyle”—peaked at Nos. 1, 2, and 3, respectively, on the Hot 100.

As for the specifics of Scary Hours 3, little is known at this moment. The first installment comprised just two songs, while the second expanded to three tracks. Whether the third installment will follow suit or take a different approach remains to be seen, though fans will know in a few hours.

Drake returned just last month with his eighth studio album, For All The Dogs. The set garnered mixed reviews from critics, but achieved immense commercial success. The album opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, giving the rapper his thirteenth chart-topper. The set also produced a pair of Hot 100 leaders with “Slime You Out” with SZA and “First Person Shooter” with J. Cole.
