Netflix’s newest surprise sleeper hit has had a run of a couple weeks on top of the Top 10 list, but its reign has finally come to an end. My Life with the Walter Boys has been unseated by Trevor Noah’s stand-up special Where Was I.
My Life with the Walter Boys, an adaptation of a book written originally by a 15 year old, has done phenomenally well on Netflix, hitting #1 and staying there for almost two weeks. Netflix has already renewed it for season 2, something which rarely happens at anything approaching this pace, so you know it must have been doing great numbers for them. Great numbers at a low cost, which is of course Netflix’s favorite.
The Crown, despite it being the literal last episodes ever of the series, has never made it to #1, indicating that the show’s glory days have faded. These final episodes focus on Prince William and his early courtship of Kate Middleton. The final episode has that thing where Harry wore the Nazi uniform at a party, and Charles marries Camila. It’s an abrupt ending, though I guess it had to stop somewhere. Still, a poor finale with low critic scores in the final season.
Then there’s School Spirits, a low-key success story now at #4 that has never made it too high up the list, but has been building steam over time and it’s kind of wild it’s this high when it debuted all the way back on November 30, implying great word of mouth. Or TikTok virality, maybe. It too has been renewed for season 2 as a result.
As we move further down, there are licensed shows like Young Sheldon and The Golden Hour. Then Netflix’s new live action adaption of Yu Yu Hakusho, which did get up pretty high, but is falling now. There’s some sort of show called Car Masters: Rust to Riches, which apparently has five seasons on Netflix? I’ve genuinely never heard of it. It sounds like my dad would like it.
Obliterated is hanging on at the end there, along with the WWII documentary, From the Frontlines. Obliterated has not been renewed for a second season yet, and it’s unclear if it’s performed well enough to warrant one. Certainly no ultra-fast renewal here like Walter Boys or School Spirits.
But yeah, a lot of good news for new shows on the list more generally, and I am curious what Walter Boys’ final viewership numbers are going to be in the greater context of the year. Surprise last minute hit there.
