Guy Ritchie’s new Netflix series The Gentlemen is the No. 1 series in the U.S. on the streaming platform. If you’ve finished all eight episodes, you’re likely wondering whether there will be a Season 2 of The Gentlemen. Here’s what to know.
Narrated in Ritchie’s iconic visual style, The Gentlemen follows a British soldier named Eddie Halstead (Theo James), who unexpectedly inherits his family’s estate after his father dies. He quickly learns that the property is intertwined with Mickey Pearson’s cannabis empire, secretly tucked beneath the polished British aristocracy. Eddie must navigate the world of dangerous and powerful players with nefarious agendas while safeguarding his home and life.
“In Guy’s world, you have to straddle, very acutely, humor and comedy, but it can’t tip into the ridiculous because then all the stakes become completely lost,” James said in a recent interview with the LA Times. “He undercuts your sense of expectation as an audience continually, which I quite enjoy. Nothing is totally serious, and I think that’s crucial. It’s not Succession.”
The TV series is set in the same universe as the 2019 film starring Matthew McConaughey, which Ritchie also directed. James confirmed to Netflix that “the world of this TV show is inspired by the movie, but the actual narrative is very different.” None of the stars from the original movie returned for the Netflix series. Instead, the spin-off boasts a fresh cast that includes James, Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Vinnie Jones, Joely Richardson, Giancarlo Esposito, Ray Winstone, Peter Serafinowicz, and more.
The final episode of the eight-part series opens the door to another installment. Read on for everything to know about the status of The Gentlemen Season 2.
Will There Be A Season 2 Of The Gentlemen On Netflix?
Netflix has not yet renewed The Gentlemen for a second season, but a renewal seems likely. Deadline reported in March 2024 that the series was envisioned as an ongoing show with multiple seasons, and Ritchie allegedly already has ideas for Season 2.
“We have started that process,” said Marc Helwig, Head of Worldwide Television, Miramax, to Deadline. “There are some writers we’ve talked to, certainly lots of discussion with Guy about what he might want to do in a second season, what things to focus on.”
The TV executive said that the first season “has to perform, and then we’ll know more,” adding, “but it’s been an active ongoing discussion already what a second season would be.” Helwig also mentioned that The Gentlemen series could “spawn some kind of a universe, a Guy Ritchie world,” potentially leading to another movie.
Giancarlo Esposito, who portrays wine aristocrat Stanley Johnston in The Gentlemen, told Digital Spy that he hopes there’s more to come from the Netflix series but noted that a second season wasn’t discussed.
“Nothing was ever discussed of a second season. But when you’re in the last episode of the first season – a really great scene, I love Ray Winstone – then you know, we have the possibility of going further. And I think the show does as well,” The Mandalorian star explained.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Gentlemen Season 1.
What Will The Gentlemen Season 2 Be About?
The ending of Season 1 of The Gentlemen lays the groundwork for a second season of the Theo James-led series. Ultimately, Eddie makes the choice to enter into a business partnership with Susie Glass, and he emerges as the co-owner of a drug empire worth billions of pounds.
“That is the beginning of his journey into the heart of darkness,” James told Netflix. “He finally realizes that with power comes death, and he begins to enjoy it… Eddie and Susie just signed the deal with the devil and they’re about to embark on a diabolical journey.”
Meanwhile, the head of the Glass family is imprisoned in an open-air prison. Bobby (Winstone) gains Stanley Johnston — whom Eddie had previously sent to jail on tax fraud charges — as an unexpected cellmate.
In the closing scene, Bobby tells Stanley about his life in prison and comments how it’s not as bad as it seems on the outside. “Prison ain’t that bad once you get used to it,” he tells Johnston, to which the wine connoisseur responds, “One could do a lot worse.” Bobby then says, “Spoken…like a true gentleman,” suggesting that Bobby and Johnston could form a new partnership together behind bars.
“I think that’s a very clever move from Bobby. Stan is quite a chap. He’s very sophisticated,” Winstone told Netflix. “Bobby can learn one or two things from this man, and Stan will be very handy for the future.”
Meanwhile, Scodelario, who plays Winstone’s on-screen daughter, theorized that “They’re either going to partner up and run everything, or Stan is going to be Bobby’s little b**ch,” she joked.
Eddie’s and Susie’s billion-dollar drug cartel and the potential schemes brewing between Bobby and Stanley are plot points The Gentlemen Season 2 could explore. Stay tuned to learn more.
The Gentlemen Season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix.
