What Is ‘Civil War’ About?
Set in a not-to-distant future, Civil War finds the former U.S. divided into four factions.
However, the film focuses almost exclusively on the battle between the Loyalist States—which covers a wide area of the middle of the former U.S. including Washington, D.C.—and the secessionist Western Forces, which curiously consists of a blue state, California, and a red state, Texas.
Kirsten Dunst stars as veteran war photojournalist Lee Smith, who travels with a rookie photographer, Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), and veteran reporters Joel (Wagner Moura) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) on a dangerous trip from New York to Washington, D.C.
The group’s goal is to find their way to the White House to interview and take photos of a dictatorial third-term president (Nick Offerman) before he is overthrown by his adversaries.
Civil War is unique in that Alex Garland’s script doesn’t take sides politically and it doesn’t even mention the Democratic or Republican parties during.
Civil War was largely embraced by Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the film an 81% “fresh” rating based on 376 reviews. Viewers on RT gave Civil War a 70% “fresh” Audience Score based on more than 1,000 viewer ratings.
