It’s only been about a day since presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump was shot at a rally, but there’s already a song about the event. Not only has one musician shared his thoughts on the subject in a new tune, but Americans are making it a hit.
Tom MacDonald’s just-released song “You Missed” is quickly rocketing up the iTunes chart in America. As of the timing of writing, the track sits at No. 3 after debuting earlier in the day.
At the moment, “You Missed” doesn’t have much further to climb before it becomes the bestselling song in America on what is usually considered the most important platform for purchasing individual tunes. Shaboozey leads with “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” which also sits at No. 1 on the Hot 100 at the moment. Eminem’s new collaboration with Jelly Roll, “Somebody Save Me,” is comfortable at No. 2.
“You Missed” sees MacDonald venting about his frustrations about the shooting, putting much of the blame for the violence–and what’s wrong with this country, in his eyes–on “the left.” His new song features lines like, “Bitch you missed / Thank God the left can’t aim” and “They don’t want an election, they got so offended by freedom that they just tried killin’ the president,” among others.
The tune also discusses other politically-charged topics, with MacDonald’s right-leaning bias clearly on display. He raps about transgender rights (“They want men to pretend that they’re feminine”), immigration (“Borders are open to people with felonies / Biden can’t stop ‘em, he don’t have the energy”), and even the validity of scientific facts (“Told us trust the science, but it never made sense to me / Why would we put all our trust in the enemy?”).
MacDonald uses language that many would find offensive, but clearly, a large enough population either agrees with or doesn’t mind his comments. The song is rising on the iTunes chart quickly, and if it keeps up its momentum, it could soon replace Shaboozey at No. 1.
For years now, MacDonald has found commercial success by releasing songs that touch on hot-button political ideas. His fan base is seemingly almost exclusively conservative and right-wing listeners, and they regularly propel his latest releases to the Billboard charts in momentary bursts of sales activity.
He’s sent several songs to the Hot 100 throughout his career, and all are politically-focused. Tunes like “Snowflakes,” “Fake Woke,” and earlier this year, “Facts” with conservative talking head Ben Shapiro have all charted for a short period of time. He’s also earned a number of additional hits on more specific lists, like the Rap Digital Song Sales ranking, as his releases are almost always powered exclusively by purchases.
