Piece by Piece—a documentary about the life and career of music icon Pharrell Williams—is coming soon to digital streaming.
Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), the logline for Piece by Piece reads, “A vibrant journey through the life of Pharrell Williams, told through the lens of LEGO animation.”
In addition to Williams, the documentary will feature the voices of such music luminaries as Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Daft Punk and Snoop Dogg.
Piece by Piece opened in theaters on October 11. According to When to Stream, Piece by Piece is expected to debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, October 29. Although When to Stream is typically accurate in its reports, the site noted that Focus Features has not announced or confirmed the release date of Piece by Piece and it is subject to change.
Per VUDU, Piece by Piece will be available for digital purchase for $24.99. Typically, digital rentals are $5 less than the purchase price, so viewers can expect to rent Piece by Piece for a 48-hour period for $19.99.
Piece by Piece will be available on PVOD on a variety of digital outlets, including AppleTV and Prime Video.
How Was ‘Piece By Piece’ Received By Audiences And Critics?
According to The Numbers, Piece by Piece has earned $8 million at the domestic box office since it opened in North American theaters on October 11. The film has not yet been released internationally.
Per Deadline, Piece by Piece had a production budget of $16 million before prints and advertising costs.
Piece by Piece was widely embraced by Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the documentary an 84% “fresh” rating based on 94 reviews.
The RT Critics Consensus reads, “A highly unusual twist on the documentary format that somehow works seamlessly, this kaleidoscopic overview of Pharrell Williams’ career is a lively testament to the power of self-belief.”
Piece by Piece also received a 90% “fresh” RT Audience Score based on 500-plus verified user ratings.
The RT Audience summary reads, “Dance to the beat of this inspiring biopic that uses LEGO animation to creatively tell the story of music giant Pharrell Williams’ rise to fame Piece by Piece.”
In an interview with NPR, Pharrell Williams said his desire to make Piece by Piece an animated LEGO documentary simply came from his love of playing with the plastic building blocks as a child.
“My earliest memories were the LEGO sets that my parents would get me when I was really, really, really young,” Williams told NPR. “Whether you actually really build what the set is all about or you’re just putting pieces together … it’s just magical.”
Piece by Piece is expected to debut on PVOD on October 29.
