It’s Christmas at last! I hope all you fine Strandsian puzzle-solvers have a lovely holiday and get to spend some quality time with your loved ones. Hopefully that quality time involves solving puzzles and playing games. I asked for a Christmas-themed Strands this year and Santa really delivered. Let’s solve it!

Strands is the newest game in the New York Times’ stable of puzzle games. It’s a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we’re given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of these words is the spangram which crosses from one side of the grid to another and reveals even more about the day’s theme.

Spoilers ahead.

Today’s Strands Breakdown

I found TOYS instantly and then noticed the ING next to it. Working backward from that, I pretty quickly found the spangram, and then it was just a matter of unscrambling the trickier words. CANDY and COAL and PENS were all simply enough. So were SOCKS and SCARF. The left side of the board—ORANGE and PLUSHIE, in particular—were what stumped me the longest. Nine words total is a lot for a Strands—and a lot to stuff into a stocking. Merry Christmas, everyone!
