The White Lotus season 3 premiere left fans with big questions, and concluded with a surprise appearance from one of the show’s few recurring characters, Greg.
Season 3 takes place in the White Lotus resort in Thailand and introduces a fresh cast of insufferably wealthy tourists. This time, we’re missing the beloved face of the series, Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge), who drowned in the finale of season 2 after a botched assassination.
However, her devious ex-husband, Greg Hunt (Jon Gries), briefly appears at the end of the episode, and is introduced with a new girlfriend.
What Happened With Tanya And Her Ex-Husband Greg?
Greg was introduced back in season 1, where he introduces himself to Tanya as working for “BLM,” the Bureau of Land Management. He asks out Tanya, but reveals that he’s terminally ill and is likely to die soon.
At this stage in her life, Tanya feels rather lost, and is oddly intrigued by this information, concluding that death is “the last immersive experience I haven’t tried.”
The interesting thing about Tanya was that her money was something of a curse—spending it was unfulfilling, and her wealth would eventually lead to her demise.
In season 2, Greg and Tanya are married and are vacationing at the White Lotus resort in Sicily. Greg is acting distant, is always on the phone, and Tanya suspects him of cheating.
Notably, Tanya made Greg sign a prenup, which surely complicates his attempt to steal her fortune.
At the end of the season, Tanya realizes that Greg appears to have hired Quentin (Tom Hollander) to murder her, in a bid to inherit her money. It’s implied that Quentin and Greg were once lovers, but the details of the botched assassination are left murky.
Despite the odds, Tanya blunders through the attempted murder, taking everyone on the boat down, but slips overboard, hits her head and drowns.
Greg’s appearance in The White Lotus season 3 gives us a few clues about what happened next; clearly, Greg loves White Lotus resorts, but also, he can afford to eat there, having seemingly gotten away with taking Tanya’s money.
How Is Greg Introduced In ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3?
Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) has fallen out with her boyfriend Rick (Walter Goggins), and while sitting at the bar, talks with another melancholic guest (Charlotte Le Bon).
The two bond over their boring, older boyfriends, and the mysterious guest reveals her boyfriend owns a house “on the top of the hill,” and that the two have been here for a year, coming down to the Lotus for meals.
The camera cuts to the boyfriend, revealing Greg.
From what little we learn of his situation, it seems clear that he successfully inherited Tanya’s money, despite the botched plan.
The exact details of Greg’s devious plot have been debated on social media forums ever since Tanya’s onscreen death, but season 3 of The White Lotus will likely conclude the storyline.
Greg is not the only recurring character—there’s also Belinda, the masseuse (Natasha Rothwell), who knew Tanya back in the previous seasons. Perhaps Greg’s new life will be complicated after an encounter with Belinda.
Either way, Jennifer Coolidge is hoping for Greg’s downfall, having expressed her wish that the character will “end up in a meat-grinding machine.”
It would be nice if Tanya had an identical twin that could wreak revenge on behalf of her sister, just so we could see Coolidge return to The White Lotus.
