A Subway store in a suburb of Savannah, Georgia had to remove a roadside sign that appeared to mock the Titan submersible disaster, reading: “Our subs dont implode.”

Photos shared online show the large sign prominently displayed underneath a Subway logo.

“We have been in contact with the franchise about this matter and made it clear that this kind of comment has no place in our business,” Subway told Fox News Digital. “The sign has since been removed.”

Subway didn’t immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment, made outside of normal working hours.

The sign appears to be referring to OceanGate’s recent submersible tragedy, during which all five people on board died.

During a trip to view the wreck of the Titanic on June 18, the Titan, the submersible, lost communication with its mothership. After days of searching for the vessel, the US Coast Guard said that the submersible likely imploded, killing its five crew members – OceanGate’s CEO, three ultra-wealthy customers, and one of their sons – and that it had collected “presumed” human remains from the wreckage.

The trip typically costs $250,000 per person. The Titan’s initial disappearance sparked an “eat the rich” sentiment online, and it didn’t take long for memes to proliferate on social media, triggering debate about whether it was appropriate to laugh at such a tragic event.

Though some commenters on Twitter and Reddit said they found the Subway sign funny, others slammed it as being insensitive.

“Not only is it distasteful, it’s just sad,” one Twitter user wrote. “Do better.”

“Trying to make money from others’ suffering is always a bad idea,” another said.
