Friday has arrived, dearest readers, and 4th of July festivities are in the rearview mirror. Another weekend of fun in the sun awaits, but so do a few new shows and movies on all your favorite streaming services.
Netflix leads the way with new content—shocking, I know—in what can only be described as a slightly slower summer weekend that might be a great time to catch up on your backlog. I know I have plenty of catching up to do!
Alright, let’s dive right in . . . .
Fatal Seduction (Netflix)
Think Fatal Attraction basically, but a trashier Lifetime movie version. The blurb: “When Nandi spends a fateful weekend away, she meets an alluring tempter who ignites her deepest passions and exposes past lies and secrets of those closest to her.”
The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2, Part 1 (Netflix)
I have not seen this series or the movie, but I know it’s a popular one and now it’s back for Season 2 which—like The Witcher—is broken into two parts. Fans of the show, is it pretty good? Are the books worth reading? I feel like I’d rather start with the books.
The Out-Laws (Netflix)
This just popped up on my radar and sounds like kind of a fun, dumb weekend comedy—something Ben Stiller might have starred in a couple decades ago. The description: “Owen Browning (Adam Devine) is a straight-laced bank manager about to marry the love of his life, Parker (Nina Dobrev). When his bank is held up by the infamous Ghost Bandits during his wedding week, he believes his future in-laws (Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin) who just arrived in town, are the infamous Out-Laws.”
Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York (Max)
A documentary about a serial killer who hunted his victims at queer bars in NYC during the height of the AIDS pandemic. Quite disturbing looking, but certainly a fascinating glimpse into a very dark time in our history.
Ongoing TV Shows
A number of shows have ended that we’ve been following here, from Barry to Succession and even FROM, but plenty carry on, and many of these I really need to catch up on!
Hijack (Apple)
Idris Elba’s new plane thriller, about a negotiator who happens to be on a plane hijacked by terrorists, has been airing for the past couple of weeks on Apple TV+ and I’ve seen the trailer now a few times. I’m a big Elba fan and this looks quite good, but I’m currently catching up on Silo so this will have to wait. Silo is excellent, by the way! It took me a couple episodes to get into it but now I’m hooked.
Secret Invasion (Disney+)
This has been getting mixed reviews, and I admit to a lot of MCU burnout, personally, but I’m hoping to get caught up on the first couple episodes with my kids. I do love Samuel L. Jackson and Nick Fury is great. The fact that Ben Mendelsohn is also returning for this show (not to mention Emilia Clarke) makes it a must-see.
The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC)
The newest Walking Dead spinoff is actually pretty decent. It starts off rough, but the next couple episodes have been good and Negan is back in fighting form which is nice to see. With just three episodes left, this could either end up being the best TWD in a long time, or it could crash and burn. We shall see!
Strange New Worlds (Paramount+)
Speaking of shows I’m way behind on, I still haven’t even started Season 1 of Strange New Worlds despite many of my readers insisting that it’s the best Star Trek in ages. I admit, sometimes my problem is that I want to watch these with my kids, but getting myself and two teenagers to all sit down and watch stuff together is tricky and we have so much to watch. I might have to just watch it by my lonesome!
Recent Shows
Other shows that you should consider tuning in for if you’ve missed them or didn’t realize they’re out yet below:
The Witcher (Netflix) — Yes, season 3 is a disaster, but it’s also Henry Cavill’s last and for me that’s a good enough reason to tune in.
The Bear (Hulu) — Season 1 was so great, and now Hulu has dropped the entire Season 2 to dive into. If you like great character drama and food prep, this show is for you.
The Great (Hulu) — I’m part way into Season 3 at this point and it’s been good so far, though a few events have been . . . quite jarring. Still making up my mind.
Silo (Apple) — As I said above, I’m loving this show. It’s the best sci-fi out there at the moment, though its first season just ended.
FROM (MGM) — One of my favorites at the moment, and Season 2 ended with such a bang! Of the two “Lost-likes” that are currently in airing, this puts Yellowjackets to shame (which surprises me since that show had a better first season).
