Amazon’s hit superhero parody The Boys is getting a fun crossover in Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone this week. Three of the hit show’s characters will be available as Operators in the shooter starting this week with the Season 4 Reloaded update. You’ll be able to blast your way across Vondel as Starlight on July 12th, Homelander on July 16th and the mysterious Black Noir on July 20th. They even held a press conference to announce the event:
The Boys crossover doesn’t just include Operator bundles, there’s also a new Temp-V Field Upgrade. This is a substance in the show that grants normal people temporary super-powers, and it’ll do the same thing in Warzone. When you use the Temp-V Field Upgrade you’ll be given one of four powers temporarily (that will be extinguished should you use another Field Upgrade):
Charge Jump — Like it sounds, you can charge up and make a massive jump across the map just like Queen Maeve. You won’t take fall damage, but you’ll inflict splash damage on anyone you slam when you land.
Electric Shockwave — A powerful electric explosion that deals damage all around you to both enemy players and vehicles and equipment. A Super EMP, basically, which Starlight is known for.
Laser Vision — This is Homelander’s signature deadly move. Once activated you’ll levitate into the air and shoot a powerful laser beam out of your eyes, devastating anything it touches.
Teleport — Hughie gets this power when he uses Temp-V. It teleports you a short distance, through walls and other obstructions, which sounds extremely useful (or annoying if it happens to you) when flanking or fleeing. Note: You won’t reappear naked—all your clothes and arsenal come along for the ride.
So that’s The Boys crossover. But there’s tons of other new content headed to both Modern Warfare II and Warzone in the Season 4 Reloaded update including a new map, a new shotgun, and lots more. Let’s go over the big additions (I’ll have a separate post here on this blog discussing the patch notes and more detailed changes when the update goes live).
New Camo Challenge
The Boys Operators and some other content is going live across both Modern Warfare II and Warzone so we’ll cover that first and then break out both games individually below.
There’s a new diabolical Camo Challenge to unlock a pair of very unique camos over the next few weeks. There’s the Vought-approved gray camouflage which unlocks for each weapon class as you finish it, and the super hard-to-get red camo pictured above that you can only unlock by completing every weapon class challenge. These are:
- Assault Rifles: Get 50 Operator headshots
- Battle Rifles: Get 25 Operator kills from behind
- SMGs: Get 250 Operator kills
- Shotguns: Get 30 Operator kills while prone
- LMGs: Get 30 Operator kills while using a suppressor
- Marksman Rifles: Get 30 Operator kills while mounted
- Sniper Rifles: Get 3 kills without dying 10 times
- Sidearms: Get 50 enemy longshot kills
- Launcher: Get 40 Operator kills
- Melee: Get 30 enemy kills
AI combatants count in these tallies, so consider Invasion or DMZ to get these kills faster.
New Shotgun
If you thought the KV Broadside was bad, let me introduce you to the fully automatic MX Guardian. This powerful close-quarters monster can be operated in single, burst or fully-auto mode. I don’t even know what to say. It’s horrifying.
The new weapon is found in the previously “Classified” section of the Battle Pass along with several other unlocks including an emblem, calling card, loading screen, and a 1 hour double weapon XP token.
Allow me to editorialize briefly: Can we get a special playlist where auto shotguns and riot shields are banned, please?
New In Season 4 Reloaded: Warzone
First off, this image above is The Boys character Black Noir, soon to be an Operator. A totally black Operator. A camp-in-the-shadows nightmare come true. I am now having visions of walking around a corner, not seeing some camper and being mowed down from the shadows by the MX Guardian. Fun times!
Anyways.
Warzone is getting some cool updates, including:
- The previously mentioned Temp-V Field Upgrade as well as a new Portable Redeploy Drone Field Upgrade.
- 72-player Battle Royale mode on Vondel.
- The Occupation Scan event (where you have to lay down when the scan goes off or risk showing up on the map).
- Signals Intelligence Contracts, previously only available in DMZ mode.
- A new Gulag map set in the wine cellar of the Vondel castle.
Definitely getting original Gulag / Prison Shower vibes from this one, though it’s actually not as grim a spot as a prison shower. Wine cellars are happier places, generally speaking. Hopefully they make this Gulag a playable Gunfight map as well. We need all the Gunfight maps we can get!
Perhaps the biggest, bestest update, however, is the addition of map rotation to Resurgence mode, which I suspect is happening because even more Resurgence maps are headed to the game. (I really hope they bring back both Rebirth Island and Fortune’s Keep). Here’s how the Rotating Resurgence Playlist system works:
Basically, the available Resurgence map will show up in-game for a specified amount of time and when the timer runs out, the new map will be available. So say you fire up the game and see that Ashika Island is currently in rotation, you’ll also see a timer that shows this will switch to Vondel in (for example) 35 minutes. When even more maps are added, they’ll all simply cycle through on a timer all the time, meaning we won’t have to go weeks without Vondel Quads available. This is a much, much better system than what’s in place currently.
New In Season 4 Reloaded: Modern Warfare II
The crown jewel of the Season 4 Reloaded update is the new 6v6 Vondel Waterfront map, which is based on the Floating District in the Resurgence map. This is one of my favorite areas of Vondel, in part because of all the water-based combat. Unfortunately, the multiplayer map has nerfed the water significantly here and you won’t be able to swim under the buildings. You will, however, be able to swim along underwater “tunnels” which is cool. Here’s an overhead view of the small map (yay more small maps!)
I’m happy we’re getting another MP map with water. At the moment only Zarqwa Hydroelectric and Pelayo’s Lighthouse really make any use out of water, and only the former in any significant way. With all the hullaballoo around water that Infinity Ward made, I’d really like to see it put to use more.
Along with the new map, there’s also a new Raid—the final 3-player co-op Raid, in fact. I played the very first Raid but haven’t kept up with any of the others as it was just not my cup of tea, but for fans of the Raids another one comes out on Wednesday.
That’s pretty much it for the rest of the season unless Infinity Ward also adds the new Gulag as a 2v2 Gunfight map, which they should. They should also remaster and release a bunch of 2019 Gunfight maps, because I miss a lot of those and we need more!
Season 4 Reloaded kicks off this Wednesday, July 12th and will run for several weeks until the start of Season 5.
