News Room

Kartik Aaryan’s new Hindi film Satyaprem Ki Katha has collected $6 million in one week since the film’s initial release on June 29. In eight days, it made $6.6 million net collections in India alone. The India gross collection for Satyaprem Ki Katha stood at $7.5 million while the worldwide collection figure was just short of $10 million.

The film made an opening collection of $1.1 million nett collections in India last weekend and the global opening collections stood at $1.5 million. The collections saw slight rise over the first weekend and the film made nett collections of $1.2 and $1.5 million on Saturday and Sunday. The first weekend collections for Satyaprem Ki Katha fell short of $4 million in India.

Satyaprem Ki Katha is Aaryan’s all-time third best opening after Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Love Aaj Kal. The film is also 2023’s sixth highest opener for a Hindi film in India. Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Prabhas-starrer Adipurush stand at the top two slots on the list of highest Hindi openers for 2023. The third and fourth slots are held by Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan and Ranbir Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. Ajay Devgn’s Bholaa is right above Satyaprem Ki Katha, on the fifth rank on the list.

Aaryan reunites with his Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 co-star Kiara Advani for Satyaprem Ki Katha. The film features Gajraj Rao and Supriya Pathak as Aaryan’s onscreen parents while Shikha Talsania plays his sister. Siddharth Randheria and Anooradha Patel essay the role of Advani’s parents. Rajpal Yadav and Nirrmite Saawaant appear in small but well-defined and important roles.

Marathi filmmaker Sameer Vidhwans makes his Bollywood debut with Satyaprem Ki Katha. Much like his national-award-winning film Anandi Gopal, his first Hindi film addresses a social issue, only wrapping the message in a typically Bollywood family entertainer this time. The 2019 film – Anandi Gopal – got him India’s National Film Award for Best Film On Other Issues. The film traced the real life story of Anandi Gopal who is touted to be India’s first female physician.

Satyaprem Ki Katha is nowhere close to the Marathi film. The Hindi movie often falters in various departments including logic and consistency. Nonetheless, it stays true to its social cause.

The journey of Satyaprem Ki Katha has not been a smooth one. The title of the film had to be changed from the original – it was first named Satyanarayan Ki Katha. The producers decided to change it soon after the film announcement last year. Satyanarayan is a Hindu God, and ‘Satyanarayan Ki Katha’ is a common religious function wherein the story of the God is narrated infront of a devotional gathering. A few people in India did not like the idea of a God’s name being associated with a Bollywood movie that does not talk about the God.

Satyaprem Ki Katha faced yet another wave of opposition and controversy earlier this year, soon after the release of a sing from the film. Titled Pasoori, the film features a song that is clearly a remade version of the Pakistani hit song by the same name. The Pakistani song was originally sung by Ali Sethi and Shae Gill and even featured in Google’s
GOOG
most-searched song last year. The new version of the song from Satyaprem Ki Katha features the voices of Bollywood singers Arijit Singh and Tulsi Kumar.
