  • Instagram’s new app, Threads, already has more than 100 million users.
  • The platform has been busy onboarding content creators to the platform.
  • Insider is sharing the 13-page document Instagram is sending to some creators explaining the app and upcoming features.

While Instagram basks in the early success of Threads, it’s already looking ahead.

The text-based app, which now has more than 100 million users signed up since its July 5 launch, is gearing up to launch several new features, according to four creator economy insiders who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their relationships with Meta. Instagram is reaching out to select creators and talent managers with an onboarding document that shares a glimpse at what’s to come.

Instagram’s 13-page document about Threads outlines everything from how to start using the new app to what a Mastodon integration may look like. The document’s existence was first reported by Lia Haberman, an adjunct professor at UCLA Extension.

One creator told Insider they had received the document from Meta’s partnerships team, which handles relationships with public figures, celebrities, brands, and content creators.

Currently, Instagram’s Twitter clone is quite bare-bones in terms of what features it offers. For instance, there are no DMs directly within the app, hashtags aren’t functional, and there isn’t a way to search for content or see trending topics.

Instagram appears to be listening to those asking for changes.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri has been chiming in on the app occasionally to respond to users’ feedback. Mosseri posted to Threads on July 11 that the Instagram team would focus on bringing “obvious missing features” to the app, such as a following feed and enhanced search.

The 13-page document shared with Insider specifically names three updates coming to trends and topics, search, and messaging.

Also “coming soon” to Threads is the decentralization features that were hyped up pre-release, the document says.

“We’re committed to building support for ActivityPub, the protocol behind Mastodon, into this app,” Mosseri posted to Threads when the app launched. “We weren’t able to finish it for launch given a number of complications that come along with a decentralized network, but it’s coming.”

The document shared with content creators and talent managers hints that integration with Mastodon should be coming soon.

Meta did not provide a comment to Insider for this story.
