Chief marketing officers are always under pressure. As parts of the economy slowly return to normal, marketing chiefs must capture the growth opportunity, while justifying their budgets and making sure their brands are capitalizing on new channels such as TikTok and streaming TV.

And many brands, including AB InBev, have recently found themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place, as their embrace of inclusivity has led to right-wing boycotts that have affected sales.

While the chief marketer’s tenure has always been among the shortest in the C-suite, it can be a path to the very top of the corporate ladder. For instance, Taco Bell’s global chief brand officer, Sean Tresvant, is set to become the company’s CEO next year.

Though turnover remains high, there will always be a crop of newly minted chief marketers poised to bring their companies to new heights. With our fifth annual “CMOs to Watch” list, Insider recognizes 25 top marketers who have stepped into the role in the past year, based on dozens of nominations and our own reporting. Many of these CMOs find themselves competing in the same industries, such as Sephora and Ulta, as well as General Motors and Mercedes-Benz.

Not all are CMOs in name, but all bring proven experience to help companies tackle some of the biggest marketing challenges, including finding ways to market efficiently on a global scale, helping smaller brands scale, and executing major brand relaunches.

They include Kraft Heinz’s Diana Frost, who is returning the food brand to growth; The Knot’s Jenny Lewis, who is leading an ambitious brand relaunch; and Glossier’s Kleona Mack, who’s helping the company move beyond direct-to-consumer sales.
