An ‘Ahsoka’ Theory Is That This Inquisitor Is Sam Witwer’s Starkiller

News Room

One of the biggest mysteries in Ahsoka so far is…whether or not one thing is supposed to be a mystery at all. The guy you see above you is Marrok, an Inquisitor, if not the last Inquisitor, who joins rogue mercenary Jedi Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati. He has an entire fight with Ahsoka herself using his signature spinning Inquisitor saber.

But like, who is this guy? Why is he here as this odd third wheel? Why would he be around at all if his identity was not supposed to be a mystery? It’s hard to see how Marrok could have been cut and Shin Hati just fills that part as well, so his presence feels like it has to mean something.

There are a few theories that touch on if this is supposed to be a mystery, who might be revealed to be under that mask. I think the thing everyone hopes is not happening is that it’s somehow a twisted version of Ezra, who is not in fact lost in another galaxy, but right under their noses and somehow…evil now.

But a more interesting theory is that fans noticed that actor Sam Witwer was listed in the credits of Ahsoka as “Additional Voices.” The theory goes:

Sam Witwer played Galen Marek, also known as Starkiller, in 2008’s The Force Unleashed, an action video game which also spawned a sequel. Marek was a secret apprentice to Darth Vader who was killed, then cloned and reborn as Starkiller, which was meant to be a more controllable version of his former self. He wasn’t, and in the games, is a truly insanely powerful force-using “apprentice,” killing Jedi masters and pulling Star Destroyers out of the sky.

So, fine, but Sam Witwer has done a whole bunch of voices in Star Wars projects over the years, including both “Additional Voices” elsewhere and of course as Darth Maul in the animated projects. But by this point in the timeline, Maul should be fully dead (for the second time).

However, Sam Witwer said in a 2017 interview that Dave Filoni considered having Starkiller show up in an episode of Star Wars Rebels as an Inquisitor, but it didn’t happen because it didn’t fit the story at the time. Now, six years later, the theory is that we have A) Dave Filoni making a new season of Rebels, B) Sam Witwer listed in the credits doing voicework, and C) A new Inquisitor that does not seem to exist for any particular reason other than being a masked mystery. It would also be somewhat poetic to have a former padawan of Anakin go up against a former apprentice of Vader.

The problem I see is that revealing the Inquisitor to be Starkiller would be a bit of a “who?” moment for most viewers. Yes, some people would “get it,” and it would be cool to see live action Witwer there, but again, this is a singular, 2008 video game that doesn’t quite enjoy the legendary status of something like Knights of the Old Republic. Many consider it to have been way, way too over the top with how strong Starkiller was, and that making him new-era canon would be a problem.

Who knows what will happen here. I would rather have it be Starkiller than Ezra, but he also may be…no one. Someone who dies in a fight with Ahsoka or Sabine later, so they don’t have to sacrifice Baylan or Shin. I guess we’ll find out eventually, maybe.
