Gal Gadot confused DC fans over the past couple weeks, giving interviews stating she was told directly by James Gunn and Peter Safran in a meeting that they would work with her to make Wonder Woman 3, a project thought dead.
“I was invited to a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran,” Gadot said. “They told me, and I’m quoting: ‘You’re in the best hands. We’re going to develop Wonder Woman 3 with you. [We] love you as Wonder Woman— you’ve got nothing to worry about.’ So time will tell.”
That sounded pretty definitive, but further reporting seems to suggest that Gadot is wrong and this is not happening, or at the very least, has not been promised to her. Both Variety and Collider’s sources have said that there is no Wonder Woman 3 in development, and that Gunn and Safran are not working on any other Wonder Woman project besides the already-announced Paradise Lost prequel series for Max, which does not feature Diana.
What happened here? Is Gadot just…making this up? It feels like what could have happened is that she met with them and they gave their usual “hey we’d love to work together again in the future if something presents itself” speech they gave actors like The Rock and Henry Cavill, and she took that to mean they were reviving Wonder Woman for a new film.
However, this is a bit confusing, because Gunn has previously said outright that they had not replaced Gadot as Wonder Woman, that she wasn’t “booted.” Gunn has previously said he was open to some actors reprising their DCEU roles, though obviously Cavil was a very specific example of that not happening. Momoa’s Aquaman, Miller’s Flash and Gadot’s Wonder Woman always seemed up in the air, but no actual projects were announced for any of them in the new DCU slate.
It does not make a whole lot of sense for the DCU to be a new refresh of the DC universe while keeping some DCEU actors and not others. But Gunn makes this complicated because of his past involvement directing DC projects. Would he replace Margot Robbie’s Harley? Would he stop making Peacemaker content? Both are from the DCEU, but both he has direct connections to. You can see how this is very messy.
What’s clear, however, is that Gal Gadot probably should not be going around stating that Wonder Woman 3 is happening, when all reporting says that it is not. Maybe she’s trying to make it happen, maybe she just misunderstood, but it’s very weird either way.
