The world has only known about Beyoncé’s concert film Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé for a very short time, but based on very early presale ticket numbers, fans are clearly anxious to see the movie.
Deadline reports that after just the first day that tickets to Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé were available via a pre-sale, the movie has already earned millions. The outlet, which cited unnamed sources that had knowledge of the picture and how things are going at this early stage, stated that first-day pre-sales for the movie were between $6 million and $7 million.
The publication claims that the numbers don’t come from AMC, which is the top theater chain in America. Deadline explained that if AMC ever releases a number, the total sum from the first day tickets were sold could rise.
Early projections from move theater insiders in the industry are suggesting that Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé could open at the box office with a $20 million weekend. That projection speaks volumes about the widespread anticipation for the documentary, as December isn’t known as a particularly lucrative time at movie theaters, especially for non-blockbuster and non-holiday events.
Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé is already performing well compared to not just concert films, but some major studio releases. According to Deadline, the singer’s concert doc earned similar first-day pre-sale numbers as successful movies like Avatar: The Way of Water ($5.5 million), Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 ($6 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($6.5 million).
Variety first broke the news that Bey had a movie coming to theaters based around her historic Renaissance World Tour. The superstar confirmed the project after concluding the global trek earlier this month in Kansas City, MO.
Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé now has its own trailer, which shows that the movie is set to be a mix between performance footage and a documentary that tracks the singer creating the show and rehearsing it. The Renaissance World Tour saw Beyoncé play to millions of fans across Europe and North America for months throughout 2023. The trek just finished with more than $500 million in ticket sales, making it one of the highest-grossing tours of all time.
