The Grammy nominations are just around the corner, and it appears that one prominent name will be absent from the list of potential winners. Blackpink member Jennie will apparently not compete in any category when the nominees are revealed, despite having a track that was both eligible and likely to at least be considered by voters.
Jennie’s was featured on the song “One of the Girls” from the TV show The Idol, and despite applause from fans and critics and some commercial success, the tune will not appear on the list of Grammy nominations this year. The Weeknd, who was not only the creator but also the star of the show, fronted the single, with the added star power of actor Lily-Rose Depp, who also played the main role in the series.
“One of the Girls” had the potential to compete for a variety of Grammy categories, depending on where it was submitted. While it could have contended in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category, the honor would have gone to the songwriters, and Jennie was solely a performer. It could have been a real contender for Best R&B Performance, where it’s best chances probably laid.
Regrettably, “One of the Girls” will not be in the running for a Grammy this year, as it was not submitted for consideration. According to Variety, The Weeknd chose not to submit any of the songs he created for The Idol, despite some of them making their way onto the Billboard charts, including his collaboration with Jennie.
The Weeknd’s aversion to the Grammys is no secret. After his song “Blinding Lights” and the album it is featured on, After Hours, were overlooked by the Recording Academy, he made a vow not to submit his own work for consideration any more. Although he did manage to secure another Grammy trophy in the years that followed, it was as a featured artist on a track submitted by Kanye West.
While Jennie won’t be competing for a Grammy on her own this year, she is still eligible as a member of Blackpink. The girl group released their sole new track, “The Girls,” in time for consideration at the upcoming awards. However, despite its eligibility, the song did not make a significant commercial impact, making a nomination unlikely.
Jennie will have another opportunity to compete for Grammy love next year, as her latest solo offering, “You & Me,” was released just under a month after eligibility began for the 2025 awards.
The full list of Grammy nominees for the 2024 ceremony will be unveiled on November 10.
