The past year has been a rather quiet one for BTS, as the band is on something of a hiatus as some of the members fulfill their government-mandated military enlistment. While the group is largely on hold, many of the singers in the outfit have been busy. Now, there are some chances that BTS could actually compete against its own members when it comes to Grammy nominations, and perhaps even wins.
BTS only has two songs eligible for the 2024 Grammys. Despite being on a break, they released two singles, “The Planet” and “Take Two,” and both were at least momentary hits. The band could submit the two tracks for consideration, but chances are they’ll focus on one. “Take Two” was the biggest of the pair. So the septet will likely send that in for voters to consider.
“Take Two” could compete for Record and Song of the Year. There’s no telling exactly how BTS, the members and their teams will negotiate what is submitted where. But at least half of the singers that make up the group could also submit work for those fields as well.
Jimin and Jung Kook both scored No. 1 hits on the Hot 100. That immense commercial success means both of their smashes should be at least thought of as in the running for one or both of those prizes. Charts and sales figures shouldn’t factor into these decisions, but they usually do, so Jimin’s “Like Crazy” and Jung Kook’s “Seven” could compete, especially for Record of the Year. The same could be said for tunes by Suga, J-Hope, Jin and RM, and fellow member V could be gearing up to release solo music as well. While all of them may end up having tracks eligible, so far, only “Like Crazy” and “Seven” have made huge commercial impacts, and thus are frontrunners, at least in this grouping.
BTS’s best chance at a Grammy nod will be in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance field, where the septet has already earned a trio of nominations. “Take Two” is certainly in the running, but it’s not alone. Jung Kook’s “Seven” is a duet with Latto, and it could be submitted in the same field. RM and Youjeen’s “Wild Flower” could also be a potential nominee, though it didn’t make nearly the same impact, so it seems less likely.
Suga re-teamed with Halsey for a reworking of the latter’s “Lilith (Diablo IV Anthem)” earlier this year, and the tune ended up becoming a big hit on a number of Billboard charts. The pair could submit it in a handful of categories, depending on which one they feel they have the best shot at winning. If they opt not to go for a rock or alternative field and stick with pop, they could be competing with BTS in Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. There’s also a chance they could be up against Jung Kook and Latto as well.
There’s a remote possibility that not only will BTS be competing against one member for a Grammy, but perhaps two or more. This seems highly unlikely, but in some of the main fields and the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, there’s no telling if this will be a divisive year and thus one that allows all these artists end up against one another.
So far, none of the members of BTS have been nominated for Grammys on their own, but 2022 and 2023 have been breakout years for a number of them. The band has thus far racked up four nominations, but they have yet to claim any trophies. When the nominees are called out in November, anything could happen, and it may be a very rare occurrence that artists are competing against themselves in the same category for Grammy glory.
