Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ Ends Its Theatrical Run. How Much Did It Make?

Francis Ford Coppola’s movie dud Megalopolis has ended its theatrical run after a rough reception at the box office.

Written and directed by Coppola, Megalopolis is a passion project for The Godfather and Apocalypse Now filmmaker that’s four decades in the making. Megalopolis was released in 1,854 North American theaters on September 27 but earned only $4 million in its opening Friday to Sunday frame.

As confirmed by The Numbers’ weekly theater count report for films in cinemas on October 25, Megalopolis’ last day on the big screen was Thursday, October 24. Per the box officer tracker, Megalopolis earned $9,830 in 75 North American venues on October 24, bringing its final domestic tally to $7,629,085.

Coupled with the $3,905,082 the film made in international ticket sales, Megalopolis’ worldwide box office tally ended at $11,534,167.

Although Lionsgate distributed Megalopolis domestically, Coppola self-financed the film as an independent production. According to Variety, Megalopolis had a production budget of $120 million before prints and advertising.

Nearly two and a half weeks after Megalopolis exited theaters, the film will make its debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday.

What Is ‘Megalopolis’ About?

The official summary for the film reads, “Megalopolis is a Roman Epic set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare.

“Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.”

The all-star cast for Megalopolis also includes Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Jon Voight, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, Jason Schwartzman and Dustin Hoffman.

Megalopolis got a tepid reception from Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively Megalopolis a 46% “rotten” rating based on 283 reviews to date. RT users spurned the film even more, giving it a 35% “rotten” Audience Score based on 500-plus verified ratings.

The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “More of a creative manifesto than a cogent narrative feature, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis is an overstuffed opus that’s equal parts stimulating and slapdash.”

Rated R, Megalopolis debuts on PVOD on several digital platforms on Tuesday.
