Ed Sheeran’s latest album – (Minus) may not have been as commercially successful as his previous works, but his talent and popularity have ensured his continued success. This week, Sheeran tops another Billboard chart, further advancing his position on an all-time ranking and proving he’s still going strong.
Sheeran’s single “Eyes Closed” has reached No. 1 on the Adult Pop Airplay chart, which ranks the tunes with the largest audience at pop radio stations in the U.S. targeting older listeners. The song climbed one spot from its previous position at No. 2, swapping places with Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers,” which had been a significant leader on the chart.
With “Eyes Closed,” Sheeran now claims eight No. 1 hits on the Adult Pop Airplay chart, tying him with Katy Perry for the fourth-most No. 1s of all time.
Sheeran’s first No. 1 on the Adult Pop Airplay chart occurred nearly a decade ago with his hit “Thinking Out Loud,” and he has continued to achieve new chart-toppers almost every year since then, although not necessarily in a perfectly regular pattern.
In addition to “Eyes Closed,” Sheeran has conquered the Adult Pop Airplay chart with hits such as “Photograph,” “Shape of You,” “Perfect,” “I Don’t Care” (with Justin Bieber), “Bad Habits,” and “Shivers.” He has also accumulated a total of 16 top 10 hits, which means that half of the tracks that enter the top 10 ultimately reach the No. 1 position.
Leading the pack for the most No. 1 hits on the Adult Pop Airplay chart is Maroon 5, with a nearly double tally compared to Sheeran and Perry, securing 15 chart-toppers to date. Pink follows closely behind with 10, and Taylor Swift is not far behind Sheeran with nine No. 1 hits of her own.
