Another day, another reboot.
A new version of drama Friday Night Lights is in the works at Universal Television, with showrunner Jason Katims onboard to return along with executive producers Brian Grazer and Kristen Zolner of Imagine Entertainment. There is no confirmed outlet at press time, nor has any casting been announced.
The focus is expected to be on new characters set in the world of high school football, which will likely mean an entirely new cast.
Debuting on NBC in the fall of 2006, Friday Night Lights followed a high school football team in the fictional town of Dillon, a small community in rural West Texas. The ensemble cast was led by Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton as high school football coach Eric Taylor and his wife Tami, a school faculty member.
After two marginally rated but critically acclaimed seasons, NBC struck a deal with DirecTV to co-produce three more seasons, with each subsequent season airing on DirecTV’s 101 Network and rebroadcast on NBC a few months later. It ultimately aired for five seasons in total.
The original Friday Night Lights was inspired by a 1990 nonfiction book by H.G. “Buzz” Bissinger about the football team at Permian High School in Odessa. It is unclear if this proposed reboot will be a regularly series or a TV movie.
