News Room

Indian star Sunny Deol is on a high as the worldwide collections for his latest film – the Hindi movie Gadar 2 – crossed $52 million at the global box office in nine days since it released in theatres on August 11. In India, the movie has grossed $48 million.

In India, the film is riding on major nostalgic value and managed to score a humoungous $3.8 million on Saturday, the ninth day. Gadar 2 earned $2.5 million on its second Friday in India. By the end of its first week, the film collected gross earnings of $ 40 million in Indian markets while it collected $45 million globally.

Gadar 2 is now the third highest-grossing Indian film of 2023. It has toppled Adipurush that grossed $47.5 million. Rajinikanth’s recent Tamil film, Jailer has reached the second slot on the list with a worldwide gross earnings of $58 million.

With an opening of $4.9 million in India alone, Gadar 2 is the second highest-opening Indian film of 2023. Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan remains at the top with an opening collection of $6.6 million in India. Gadar 2 ran full-houses in several cities and towns across India throughout the first week of its release and the footfall continues to be significantly high even in the second weekend.

Gadar 2 registered its highest single-day collection on August 15, when India celebrated Independence Day. With a $6.2 million nett collection in India alone, it surpassed even its first day opening of $4.9 million.

Directed by Anil Sharma, the film also features Ameesha Patel, Gaurav Chopraa and Utkarsh Sharma in important roles. Deol reprises his role of Tara Singh in the film that also features Patel and Sharma stepping back into their roles of Sakeena and Jeete respectively.

Filmmaker Sharma falls back heavily on Deol’s fandom and the charisma and charm of the lead character Tara Singh (from the first film, Gadar Ek Prem Katha) only adds the nostalgia. Gadar Ek Prem Katha was set during the India and Pakistan partition and traced the love story of Singh and Sakeena – hailing from the two different, newly separated countries. The new film uses the decades’ long rivalry between India and Pakistan. Set in the 1970s, ahead of the war between the two countries that eventually led to the formation of Bangaladesh, Gadar 2 features Jeete travelling to Pakistan and his journey back to India.

A commendable feature of Gadar 2 is that it does not precisely attack any particular religion, though the premise of the film is such and it releases at a time when doing that would not have had too many repurcussions. Instead, Gadar 2 targets and attacks all the individuals who use and abuse religion as a means to fulfil their political and personal agenda. Deol and Chopraa must be lauded for their exceptional performance in the film. Sharma has also essayed his bits to satisfaction. The female characters are not nuanced enough for the actors to showcase any meritworthy talent.
