The Indian box office witnessed yet another high-budget film ermerge as a box office dud this week. Two Hindi movies came out last weekend- Tiger Shroff-starrer Ganapath A Hero Is Born, and Yaariyan 2 and both struggled to even reach $3 million worldwide gross collections in a week. The Tamil film Leo and the Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari kept the cash registers ringing at the Indian ticket counters the past week.
After a dull opening collection of $360,000 on October 20, Ganapath A Hero Is Born consistently dipped with time. Mounted on an estimated budget of $24 million, the film features Shroff in the lead role of Ganapath. The film also features Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan, apart from Jameel Khan, Girish Kulkarni, Kriti Sanon, Elli Avram, and a few others. As the film completed one week at the box office on Friday (October 27), it managed to score $2.6 million worldwide. The India nett collections of the movie stood at $1.4 million.
Written and directed by Vikas Bahl (of Queen, Super 30 fame), Ganapath A Hero Is Born is a futuristic film set in a time when the rich section of the world get together to ghettoize the poor and exploit them. The film is replete with stereotypes, forced melodrama and unrealistic emotions. The unimaginative writing gets no help from the gimmicky performances that further pull down the film. Shroff does everything that he excels at – dancing and fighting. Unfortunately this time, his talent is not backed by a a story and screenplay meaty enough to keep the audience hooked to enjoy the antics.
Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru’s Yaariyan 2 had much worse start at the ticket windows with a meagre $60,000 collections in India on the first day of the release. The film features Meezan Jafri, Divya Khosla Kumar, and Pearl V Puri. Most reviews panned Yaariyan 2 and the collections further dipped over its first week. By the end of week one, Yaariyan 2 managed to earn just $450,000 worldwide.
Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo made an impressive opening when it hit theatres on October 19. The film made nearly $8 million in India while the wordlwide gross collections crossed $17 million on the opening day itself. Starring Joseph Vijay in the lead role, the film also features Sanjay Dutt, Trisha Krishnan. The Tamil film has managed $58 million worldwide gross in nine days of the release.
Telugu star Nadamuri Balakrishna’s new film Bhagavanth Kesari also released last week and the movie has managed to collect $12 million worldwide in eight days. Directed Anil Ravipudi, the film also stars Arjun Rampal and Kajal Aggarwal in important roles. After making an opening of $2 million in India and the collections saw an downward trend over the weekend. Despite the dip in collections, Bhagavanth Kesari has earned $10 million in India by the end of a week.
Telugu film Tiger Nageshwara Rao also released on the same day but it failed to attract the audience as Bhagavanth Kesari. Featuring Ravi Teja in the lead role, Tiger Nageshwara Rao made an opening collection of $60,000 in India. The collections dipped over the weekend and the week one collection of the film in India stood below $4 million. It managed a worldwide collection of $4.7 million.
