Over two decades after it took the world by storm and made its way into the Guinness World Records as the most successful telenovela in history, the iconic Colombian dramedy Yo Soy Betty, La Fea is making a highly-anticipated comeback.
The fairy tale comedy about Beatriz “Betty” Aurora Pinzón Solano, a talented economist who transforms from an “ugly duckling” into a confident swan, lands her prince charming and gets a happy ending, picks up 20 years after the conclusion of the original, which was written by Fernando Gaitán.
The sequel, Betty la Fea, The Story Continues, is once again produced by RCN Estudios, but this time exclusively for Amazon’s Prime Video.
Lead actors Ana María Orozco (Cochina Envidia) and Jorge Enrique Abello (Last One Laughing Colombia) return as Betty and Armando Mendoza.
This new installment delves deeper into Betty’s life and adventures after her initial storybook romance, which seems to have veered off course. Now a mother to a teenage daughter named Mila, Betty faces the task of rebuilding their relationship. Meanwhile, her once-idyllic marriage to Armando is showing signs of strain, prompting her to question the decisions she made two decades ago.
The new series also reunites original cast members Julián Arango (Rigo), Natalia Ramírez (MANES), Lorna Cepeda (Amas de casa desesperadas), Luces Velásquez (Sin senos sí hay paraíso), Marcela Posada (Todos quieren con Marilyn), Mario Duarte (Francisco el matemático), Julio Cesar Herrera (Sin senos sí hay paraíso), Ricardo Vélez (El último matrimonio feliz), Alberto León Jaramillo (La vida después del reality) and Estefanía Gómez. Also joining the cast: Rodrigo Candamil (A grito herido), Juanita Molina (MANES), Zharick León (La viuda de blanco) and Sebastián Osorio (Pasión de gavilanes).
The original Yo soy Betty, la Fea has aired in 180 countries, dubbed into 15 languages, and has been adapted in up to 28 territories. In the U.S., screenwriter and producer Silvia Horta adapted the hit telenovela into Ugly Betty, starring America Ferrara in the title role, which aired on ABC for four seasons (2006-2010). Telemundo also reimagined the series in 2019 with Betty in NY, starring Elyfer Torres and Erick Elías. This version algined more closely with the ABC adaptation.
Betty La Fea, The Story Continues, drops on Prime Video July 19, 2024. The new series will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
