Heretic—the hit horror thriller starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East—debuts on digital streaming this week.
The official logline for Heretic—which opened in theaters on November 8—reads, “Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed, becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.”
Grant stars as Mr. Reed while Thatcher and East play Mormon missionaries Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton. Heretic is written and directed by Bryan Woods and Scott Beck.
When to Stream reported that Heretic will arrive on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, December 10. While When to Stream is generally accurate with its digital streaming reports, the streaming tracker noted that Heretic’s studio A24 did not announce or confirm the PVOD release date for the film and it is subject to change.
When Heretic is released on PVOD it can be purchased on a variety of platforms including Prime Video, AppleTV and VUDU for $24.99 or rented for a 48-hour period for $19.99.
According to The Numbers, Heretic has earned $27.3 million domestically in ticket sales and $12 million internationally for a worldwide box office take of $39.2 million to date. The Associated Press reported that Heretic had a production budget of less than $10 million before prints and advertising.
Directors Say Hugh Grant Was The Only Person Who Could Play Mr. Reed In ‘Heretic’
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter just after the release of Heretic in theaters, Heretic filmmakers Bryan Woods and Scott Beck said they launched a “meticulously planned battle campaign” to land Hugh Grant for the role of Mr. Reed.
As such, Woods and Beck said they called everyone they knew at Grant’s management agency CAA, as well as Heretic’s studio A24 in hopes of connecting with the veteran actor.
“And we basically asked, ‘Please, please, please. There’s only one person who can play this role. It’s Hugh Grant. Help us get it to him. Please convince him that this is a good project for him,’” Woods recalled for THR. “And that’s a risky move to take because if Hugh says no, we can’t go back to those 20 people and go, ‘Just kidding about Hugh. Actually, this person over here was the only person who could play the role.’
“So you can only do that once, but we just felt so strongly that it had to be Hugh, especially after revisiting all of his work in the last 10 years and this character actor journey that he’s been on, starting with Cloud Atlas to playing an Oompa-Loompa in Wonka,” Woods added. “The bizarre risks that he’s taking are insane and really inspiring.”
Rated R, Heretic is expected to arrive on PVOD on Tuesday.
