The first full-length trailer for The Mean Girls movie musical is finally here. The sneak peek highlights a new generation of plastics alongside fan favorites who’ve appeared throughout the beloved Mean Girls franchise. However, there’s something glaringly missing from the promo: the music.
In a surprising move, the trailer didn’t give viewers any indication that the film is, in fact, a musical. It failed to include any musical numbers from the Broadway show. Instead, Olivia Rodrigo’s new single “get him back!” played in the background.
“i’m so sorry but how are you gonna have a mean girls musical movie trailer with no music from the musical… like we know Reneé can sing but can the rest of the cast?!?” one X user wrote. “you’re telling me the ‘mean girls’ musical trailer includes no music from the actual musical,” another person penned on X (formerly Twitter).
The Mean Girls movie musical is an adaptation of the 2018 Tony-nominated Broadway musical based on the 2004 comedy. Reneé Rapp (The Sex Lives of College Girls) will play Regina George (reprising her Broadway role), while Angourie Rice (Mare of Easttown) will portray Cady Heron (played by Lindsay Lohan in the original movie).
Tina Fey, who penned the 2004 movie, the Broadway show and the upcoming film, will also star in the musical as Ms. Norbury. Tim Meadows (who played Principal Duvall in Mean Girls) will also be reprising his role.
The cast also features Christopher Briney (The Summer I Turned Pretty) as teenage heartthrob Aaron Samuels, Bebe Wood (Love, Victor) and Avantika Vandanapu (Spin) as fellow plastics Gretchen Weiners and Karen Smith, Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) as Janis Ian, Jaquel Spivey (A Strange Loop) as Damian Hubbard and more.
Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels also returned to produce the movie directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.
While Mean Girls was slated to debut on Paramount+, the anticipated film was moved to a theatrical release and will now premiere in theaters on Jan. 12, 2024.
