The world is still mourning the loss of Jimmy Buffett, who passed away unexpectedly after a private battle with cancer on September 1. In the days and weeks following his death, his dedicated fan base helped many of his biggest hits return to the Billboard charts. Now, his first posthumous single is proving to be a proper hit–the kind he hasn’t experienced in decades.
Buffett’s current single, “Bubbles Up,” rises again on this week’s edition of the Adult Contemporary chart. The ranking, published every week by Billboard, tallies the best-performing tunes across radio stations in the U.S. that focus on adult contemporary, a more mature subset of pop.
This frame, “Bubbles Up” floats six spaces in its second turn on the Adult Contemporary chart. The tune is up to a new high of No. 22 after opening at No. 28 last time around.
“Bubbles Up” now serves as Buffett’s highest-charting hit on the Adult Contemporary chart in more than 30 years. The last time the singer-songwriter appeared higher on the list was back in 1989. That year, his single “Take Another Road” drove to No. 18, where it peaked.
Buffett has sent 16 different songs to the Adult Contemporary chart throughout his career, both during his lifetime and now following his death. Of that sum, just two tracks have cracked the top 10. One of those smashes, “Margaritaville,” spent time at No. 1.
“Bubbles Up” was selected as the first official single from Buffett’s upcoming album, Equal Strain on All Parts. The set serves as his first posthumous release, and it’s expected on November 3. The track was released a week after his death along with two other tunes featured on the forthcoming full-length.
