John Lennon Is Surging Up The Billboard Charts

News Room

The vast majority of older songs and albums that are gaining ground and performing well on the Billboard charts this week are directly connected to the major holiday that just passed. Christmas music is huge in America, and many collections and tunes explode in popularity around this time of year. John Lennon is a part of this trend, as one of his compilations is gaining on a number of lists–and its thanks, at least in small part, to his own holiday smash.

Lennon’s compilation Gimme Some Truth. is surging on several Billboard charts this week. Millions of Americans have been streaming and buying his holiday single “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” bringing the tune back to various rankings as well. The song is featured on the former Beatle’s greatest hits set, and all that consumption has apparently helped the title rise dramatically once again.

Gimme Some Truth. bolts more than 70 spaces on this week’s Billboard 200. The set shoots from No. 183 to No. 112, its highest position in some time. According to data shared with the media by Luminate, Lennon’s compilation moved another 12,115 equivalent units in the past tracking period. It only sold a few dozen copies, so streaming made up the bulk of the rest of that activity.

The same title is performing even better on Billboard’s rock-focused charts, which isn’t surprising, as Lennon is one of the most beloved rockers ever. On the Top Rock & Alternative Albums ranking, Gimme Some Truth. lifts from No. 45 all the way to No. 19. It re-enters the top 20, a space it has already reached in the past, as the set previously topped out at No. 5.

The effort performs similarly on the more specific Top Rock Albums chart. Gimme Some Truth. stalls at No. 15 this frame. It reappears on the tally, as it wasn’t able to break onto the ranking last period.

Gimme Some Truth. marks the second-loftiest re-entry on the Top Rock Albums chart this week. Coincidentally, Lennon comes in behind only his former bandmate Paul McCartney. That rocker’s McCartney II is back at No. 13.
