Julia Roberts Tearjerker Debuts Big On Netflix Global Top 10 Movies Chart

An inspiring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson family drama from 2017 has entered Netflix’s Global Top 10 Movies chart in its first week on the streaming service.

The movie—Wonder—stars Roberts as Isabel Pullman, who along with her husband, Nate (Wilson), decide to enroll their son, Auggie (Jacob Tremblay) in fifth grade after years of being home-schooled.

Auggie was born with Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare craniofacial disorder that has affected the young boy’s ability to see, speak and hear. The challenge for the Pullmans is the uncertainty over how Auggie will be accepted by his new classmates.

According to Netflix, Wonder debuted at No. 5 on the streaming service’s Global Top 10 Movies chart for the week of June 10-16 with 5 million views, which equates to 9.5 million viewing hours.

Wonder is based on author R.J. Palacio’s 2012 book of the same name. Palacio told ABC News in 2017 that the book’s narrative is rooted in a real-life incident where her young son began crying hysterically when he saw a girl with a facial deformity in public.

Palacio told the outlet that she panicked and turned around her son’s stroller and walked away—which turned out being a hasty decision that she painfully regretted.

“It was terrible, and I was so mad at myself for the way that I handled it,” Palacio told ABC News. “For the rest of the day, I just kept thinking about all the things I wished I’d said and done.”

Eventually, Palacio did put her thoughts into what would become Wonder.

“I just thought, ‘OK, I’m going to write a book, and it’s going to be about what it must be like to face a world every day that doesn’t know how to face you back,’” Palacio told ABC News.

What Other Movies Made Netflix’s Global Chart?

Hit Man—the new Netflix original film starring Glen Powell as a fake hit man—spent its second week at No. 1 on the streamer’s Global Top 10 Movie Chart for the week of June 10-16.

Also starring Adria Arjona, Hit Man was viewed 13.7 million times, which equates to 26.5 million viewing hours, Netflix reported.

Hit Man was also the No. 1 most-viewed movie on the Netflix U.S. Top 10 chart for the second consecutive week.

Coming in at No. 2 on the global movies chart was the 2005 Mark Wahlberg action drama Four Brothers (7.4 million views/13.5 million viewing hours), followed by the 2023 Tom Cruise action thriller Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (5.6 million views/15.3 million viewing hours).

The new Netflix original documentary Mysteries of the Terracotta Warriors debuted at No. 4 on the global movies chart with 5.2 million views, which translates to 6.8 million hours viewed.

All of the films on this week’s global movies chart will face stiff competition in the coming week with the debut of the Netflix original movie Trigger Warning—a crime thriller starring Jessica Alba and Anthony Michael Hall.
