Spacey Unmasked — a docuseries about the rise and tumultuous fall of Kevin Spacey after sexual misconduct allegations were leveled against the actor — has been acquired by Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming service.
According to Variety, Spacey Unmasked will feature interviews for the first time with “multiple men” who have had experiences with Spacey. The industry trade noted that the description of the two-part docuseries indicates the men are not connected to Spacey’s 2023 sexual assault trial in the U.K.
Spacey Unmasked is scheduled to make its television debut on Channel 4 in the UK on May 6 and May 7 but a U.S. streaming date for Max has not yet been announced, Variety reported.
Variety noted that Spacey Unmasked was announced by Channel 4 in the UK in 2022. Spacey was found not guilty of charges of sexual assault in July of 2023.
The publication revealed the synopsis of the docuseries, which reads, “Spacey Unmasked is a forensic look at a man who was once one of the most admired and respected actors in the world. Featuring never-seen-before interviews and archive, the series examines his life from childhood to early success on Broadway and subsequent meteoric rise to stardom. Kevin Spacey’s spectacular fall from grace came amid allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior.”
Spacey Was Called Out At The Beginning Of The #MeToo Movement
Kevin Spacey’s career began to crumble at the beginning of the #MeToo movement in 2017 when, according to BuzzFeed, actor Anthony Rapp accused the actor of making unwanted sexual advances against him when he was 14 years old.
A lawsuit including Rapp’s claims was filed in 2020 but Spacey was found not liable in 2022 in the claims made by the Rent actor.
One of the first consequences of the allegations against Spacey was his dismissal from the role of billionaire J. Paul Getty in the 2017 Ridley Scott biographical drama All the Money in the World.
Even though a trailer featuring Spacey in the role had already been released, all of Spacey’s scenes as Getty were re-shot with Christopher Plummer taking over the role. Plummer, ironically, received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for playing Getty.
Spacey — whose past roles include the Oscar-winning movie American Beauty and hit Netflix streaming series House of Cards — has only appeared in a handful of films since his dismissal from the Getty role in All the Money in the World.
Among Spacey’s most recent credits are the 2018 biographical drama Billionaire’s Boys Club and a voice role in the 2023 action thriller Control. According to IMDb, Spacey is set to play the lead in the upcoming comedy-drama thriller Peter Five Eight, which will be released in theaters in May.
A Spacey representative issued a statement to Variety responding their story, which the publication shared in the X post below.
Note: The original story indicated that Spacey Unmasked would stream on Max in the U.K. Instead, it will air on Channel 4 in the U.K. and the information has been corrected in the story above. Spacey Unmasked will air on Max in the U.S. at future date that has not yet been determined.
Note: A second update has been made to the story, which includes Spacey’s response to Variety story above.
