Lily Collins has another big hit on Netflix, and it’s not her streaming series smash Emily in Paris.
Instead, it’s a 2020 box office flop starring Collins that is attracting big viewership. It’s a mystery thriller called Inheritance, which stars Collins as Lauren Monroe. After Lauren’s rich and powerful father, Archer (Patrick Warburton), dies, he leaves his daughter a video message with a secret that she is instructed to take to her grave.
Directed by Vaughn Stein, Inheritance also stars Connie Nielsen, Chace Crawford and Simon Pegg.
According to box office tracker The Numbers, Inheritance wasn’t even released in U.S. theaters and only played in international venues, where it made a paltry $180,000.
Inheritance, however, has found a big audience on Netflix four weeks after the movie debuted on the streaming service. According to the platform, Inheritance debuted at No. 4 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Movies chart for June 17-24.
Inheritance, Netflix notes, had 5.1 million views for the time period, which equates to 9.5 million viewing hours.
The No. 1 most-watched movie on the streaming service globally from June 17-24 was the Netflix original movie Trigger Warning. The action thriller starring Jessica Alba had 27.5 million views, which translates to 49.9 million viewing hours.
‘Inheritance’ Was Loathed By Critics
Rotten Tomatoes critics mostly splattered Inheritance with negative notices, giving the movie a “rotten” 23% rating based on 56 reviews. RT users didn’t like Inheritance much better, bestowing it with a 27 percent Audience Score based on 250-plus user ratings.
The film’s negative reviews perhaps explain why Inheritance was never released in the U.S. Some stateside critics still reviewing the movie, presumably when it was released on home video.
Rolling Stone movie critic gave Inheritance 0 out of 5 stars, writing, “A blithering botch job of a thriller that begs the question: ‘Come on, are you effing kidding me?’ If this is an inheritance, leave us out of the will, please.”
Variety film critic Dennis Harvey, meanwhile, was equally brutal in his assessment of Inheritance, writing of the film’s big mystery, “A climactic revelation meant to shock may well make viewers laugh out loud instead.”
Sadly, Harvey added, there’s not much going on aside from the film’s big reveal.
“This overlong tale spends most of its nearly two hours as a somewhat draggy, talky mystery before finally deciding to be a thriller, with credibility lacking throughout,” Harvey writes.
Inheritance does, however, find a few favorable RT reviews. Alan Ng from Film Threat gives the movie 8.5 out of 10 stars, writing, “Inheritance draws you in and takes you right into the middle of the action. Then when it’s all over, you’ll want to revisit it as soon as possible to pick up on all the little details and clues.”
Inheritance and the first three seasons of Collins’ hit series Emily in Paris are all streaming on Netflix.
Collins will next star opposita Mia Goth in director Ti West’s horror movie MaXXXine, which opens in theaters July 5.
