Both Madonna and Britney Spears are in the middle of difficult times in their personal lives. The Queen of Pop is recovering from a serious infection that sent her into the hospital, while Spears is getting divorced again. Amidst their personal woes, the two singers may be planning a fun musical reunion. And even if it only lasts for one song on a single night, seeing the two together again is sure to delight their legions of fans.
Page Six reports that Madonna is trying to get Spears to join her on her upcoming The Celebration Tour. The outlet states that sources claim that Madonna wants the Grammy winner to come on stage during one of her several shows scheduled in Los Angeles, CA. The dates aren’t until next March, so anything can happen between now and then, but nothing has been confirmed.
If this on-stage duet does take place, it wouldn’t be the first time that Spears joined Madonna during one of her tours. More than a decade ago in November 2008, she surprised fans in attendance during Madonna’s Sticky & Sweet Tour in Los Angeles, CA for a thrilling performance.
Madonna and Spears have collaborated in the past in a few instances, in addition to the aforementioned surprise tour cameo. Perhaps most memorably, the two shared a kiss on stage during the MTV Video Music Awards. The two were joined by Christina Aguilera, who also smooched with Madonna, though history largely remembers Spears’s kiss, as it was shown first. The collaborative performance and loving moment were a huge milestone in pop culture and it is still talked about to this day.
The singers have also released one single together. The two teamed up for the tune “Me Against The Music” from Spears’s album In The Zone. The track was released as the lead single from the project in the fall of 2003, and it went on to peak at No. 35 on the Hot 100, underperforming somewhat.
Madonna is apparently so keen to recruit Spears for her concert as she wants to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the song. The tune will officially turn 20 this fall, and while that doesn’t line up with Madonna’s tour dates in America, a few months later would still be a good time for a celebration. The pop icon is in a period of reflection, as her recent releases and her upcoming trek are all about her past hits. It makes perfect sense that she wants Spears to join in on the fun and honor a fan favorite track.
Madonna is currently preparing to launch her The Celebration Tour, which was recently pushed back. The singer was forced to cancel the initial leg of the venture—most of her U.S. dates—as she was hospitalized with a bacterial infection. She kept her international shows where they were, and she’s now planning on beginning the project in October in London. She recently rescheduled all the American shows, which will now kick off in mid-December in New York City.
