Netflix viewers are embracing Madame Web, a Marvel box office dud that’s finding a new audience on the streaming service’s Top 10 Global Movies chart.
Sony Pictures Entertainment released Madame Web in theaters on February 16. According to box officer tracker The Numbers, Madame Web—a Marvel Comic Book superhero movie starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney—earned $43.8 million in theaters domestically and $56.4 million in international ticket sales for a worldwide box office tally of $102.2 million.
Madame Web, however, had an $80 million production budget before prints and advertising, which generally ups a film’s final cost considerably.
On top of that, Madame Web was squashed by Rotten Tomatoes critics, who gave it a collective 11% “rotten rating based on 246 reviews. Meanwhile, 1,000 verified users on Rotten Tomatoes gave Madame Web a neutral 57% Audience Score.
Madame Web’s box office take and critical dissection apparently didn’t matter to Netflix viewers, however, as the film—according to the streamer—was viewed 10.8 million times during the week of May 13-19, which equates to 20.8 million viewing hours.
Madame Web was also No. 1 on Netflix’s U.S. Top 10 Movies chart from May 13-19 and was also one of the Top 10 movies on Netflix in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.
What Other Movies Are In The Netflix Global Top 5?
Holding on to the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Movies chart for the second consecutive week is the Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt rom-com Mother of the Bride, which had 25.4 million views, which translates to 38.1 million hours.
Debuting at No. 3 on the Netflix global chart behind Madame Web is the 2007 Shia LaBeouf mystery thriller Disturbia (7.7 million views/13.5 million viewing hours).
The 2024 Netflix original animated musical Thelma the Unicorn (7.3 million views/12 million viewing hours) debuted at No. 4 on the global, while the Best Animated Feature Oscar winner Shrek (5.1 million views/7.7 million viewing hours), released in 2001, came in at No. 5 on the global chart in its 10th week of release on Netflix.
Meanwhile, the original Netflix comedy film Unfrosted continued to slide down the Netflix Global Top 10 Movies chart after debuting at No. 1 two weeks back.
Unfrosted—directed by Jerry Seinfeld and starring Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer—placed No. 9 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 for the week of May 13-19 with 2.5 million views, equating to 4 million viewing hours.
This Friday, Netflix will be releasing another original movie on its streaming service, the sci-fi action movie Atlas, starring Jennifer Lopez, Sterling K. Brown and Simi Liu.
